Hello All,
I found an international site that described matching a MT82 six-speed gearbox from a TDCi Defender, and LT230 transfer box. Is this a standard set up or a hybrid arrangement - I am only familiar with Series IIIs
Are these gearboxes and transfer boxes available in Australia?
What would the advantage be of connecting the two? Does this form constant 4WD?
The combination was put into a SWB Defender.
Kind Regards
Lionel

I think the issue with transplanting the box is that the bellhousing is integral, so into unless transplanting the engine too you need to do adapter work gearbox to engine.
To answer your other question, yes, the LT230 is a constant 4WD transfer.

There must be different versions of the box as its also used in the current mustang both v8 and turbo4 .

Hello Steve,
Thanks for the information about an adaptor and for clarifying that it is a constant 4WD transfer box.
As stated previously ... I my knowledge is limited to Series IIIs
How would this combination of gearbox transfer case (MT82 six-speed gearbox from a TDCi Defender, and LT230 transfer box) be for towing something like a car trailer with a Series III LWB as a load.
What year of manufacture was the Defender engine gearbox combination available?
How would it be comparing such a Defender against a Perentie with LT95 gearbox and the 3.9 litre Isuzu driving from Bundaberg and Corowa and back? Without needing a kidney belt and hearing aids by the end of the trip. Did all Perenties come with the LT95 or just the 6x6?
It will be a while - hopefully, not too long before I can act on a tow vehicle; so I have time to hatch a "cunning plan - my lord!" Apologies to Baldrick of Blackadder!
Kind Regards

2007 til current model defender , how it tows will depend on what engine its mated to and what vehicle its in .
Steve can better answer how it compares to an isuzu.

Hello Loanrangie,
I was just doing some research before sending off the next reply - however, you beat me to it. Thank you for the information.
Gee it is not easy to do a search for a vehicle when you include the gearbox code to a model - such as Discovery or Defender!
I had found a manual that mentioned 2007 - 2010 for a year range. However with your information it went until the current model Defender

I found a Discovery with that configuration too - not sure how long the box was fitted to Discovery - whether it included the latest model or not?

2006 Land Rover Discovery 3 SE Silver Automatic 6SP A Wagon in VIC | eBay I had to check what that model Discovery even looked like!
The next question I suppose is that both the Defender and Discovery are "station wagons". Did the Defender with the 6-speed auto come out in a trayback version?
I had better do some more research into Defender and Discovery diesel engines. 200tdi to 300tdi to TD5 that just pulls my knowledge to its full extent at the moment. There seems to be lots of threads about the MT82 here on AULRO.
Kind Regards

Lionel, the Discovery 3 you have linked to is an auto, not a manual, which is a ZF 6HP26 auto tranny. The Disco3 with the MT82 manual box is as rare as rocking horse poo in Australia. I remember Sneigy mentioning once that they had only 2 manual D3s go to the dealers he worked at.
And there was never an official Defender auto version, never mind in a tray back, I think you may have got a little mixed up along the way there.
Hello Dave,
It does not take too much at all to mix me up beyond a Series III. I can sort of navigate into the realms of a TD5 Discovery or Defender. At this moment I do not even know what model gearboxes transfer cases were fitted to the TD5s.
All the stuff beyond the TD5 is new plastic to me. I was going to write "new iron". However, it does not apply. That is the Luddite Series III owner coming out in me.
More research is called for and I had better take a couple of steps back to gear boxes of various ilks.
I can see Defender tray back utes dated 1993 Accessed July 4th 2016 from http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/arthu...ute/1115335994 to a 2000 http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/rye/c...ute/1114956228 with a style side on Gumtree.
When did they stop making Defender Utes? I am just looking at the ute shape not their gearboxes by the way!
Kind Regards
Lionel
From what I recall, Defender utes or cab chassis styles were discontinued slightly earlier than the station wagon styled 110 or 90, MY15 maybe?
