Defender Td5 no start after horrendous noise.

Went to start the defender this morning. Horrendous noise so shut it down. Didn't happen, so put it in gear and let the clutch out to stall it, not happening. Lurched forward a few times then died, probably ran out of fuel as the pump wouldn't be running. Billows of smoke from under the bonnet, lifted and seems to be coming from around the starter motor area, drivers side behind the engine. HH looked and can't find any fried wires.

Thought is the starter motor has cooked from the inside. Was replaced about 4 months ago. Ideas???

starter solenoid could have stuck in the engaged position.

Ive seen it happen on cheaper setups a couple of times.

FPR dripping onto starter shorting it would explain noise, failure to disengage and then smoke!!!
