Defender door latches
Door latches on the 130 are driving me mad.
Saw the thread a while back wrapping electrical tape around the striker. I had a look at mine and for sure those placcy bits have been chewed all up. If I turn the placcy thing around door catches much better.
So I thought I'd move the striker plate and get the latch to catch on the exposed metal of the striker and forget about the sleeve. No joy.
I'm pretty sure the tape fix will work, but it's the kind of job I only want to do once. Has anyone had a go at replacing the placcy sleeve with something more durable?
Cheers

He's talking about the striker, Zook.
The pin that the plastic sleeve sits on is peened/pressed/unmoveable/unreplaceable. I just keep wrapping 'leccy tape around mine, 'cause I'm cheap

im gonna have to go for a walk to see mine....
is it something a piece of plastic tube (or garden hose) with a split in it will fix.....?
and maybe some sikaflex to keep it in place....?

Sorry, the fault is that the plastic sleeve on the door latch/striker is worn to nothing, so the doors don't catch properly.
You're saying replace the whole striker plate?
I thought that the sleeve is impossible to replace, but hope that that isn't the case.
What I wanted to hear is that someone has pulled one of the buggers apart and added a sleeve in some softish metal like brass.
Zook's suggestion is closest. Now I'm wondering if a bit of copper water pipe cut in half and glued in place might do it.
If not, maybe the ubiquitous black water pipe that seems to be underfoot on every country property.

Sorry to be dim but I am interested in this problem as I am suffering from it at the moment and looking for a solution.
On the bit that is connected to the body there is a thingamy that the claw whatsit (striker?) on the door itself grabs when you shut the door. On my car that thingammy has what is left of a little bit of plastic wrapping afdter years of mangling.
Am I right in thinking that a bit of electrical tape (or Zook's higher end engineering solutions) around where the rubber used to be will help the closing of the door? Is that what's being suggested here?

Exactly that, James. My '85 had it, my 130 has it, so I'm guessing it's a common problem.
I'm doing the lazy man thing and hoping that someone has already done the hard work and solved it in a permanent and clever way.
Or that someone will come up with something brilliant here.
I guess it would help in my search for the appropriate sized pipe to go out and measure the inside and outside diameters of the stuff.

so what exactly happens when this wears out.....?
what do you mean it doesnt catch properly......?
does the door come open whilst driving...?
it may just require some adjustment of the striker......
it may need to simply just be adjusted out closer to the door.....
