Can I just unplug the ECU?

Managed to drown my TD5 Disco today but things have dried out and it is running good again. Was going to go over it tomorrrow with a can of WD40 and generally clean it up a bit and am wondering if I can simply disconnect the ECU and then plug it back in again. Does the key have to be in any specific position at all or is it as simple as unplugging it, cleaning it (maybe bagging it to protect it further) and then plugging it back in again and away I go? Anything to watch out for and any tips on how to protect the ECU etc from water in the future?

Thanks for the ECU tips DEFENDERZOOK, will be unplugging it, cleaning it and then trying to make it as water tight as I can.

As for how I did it, well, there is a nice water hole on one the tracks at Ormeau which has a steep banked entrance and exit so it seems to hold the water in pretty well after some rain, anyway, I have been through it many times with the water spilling over the bonnet and up the windscreen but on this occasion I knew it was deeper so I went in slower and the water just lapped over the bonnet. Got to the middle and then it all just died 8O ops: . All you could hear was that horrible gurgling sound of water squeezing it's way into the cab through the crappy LR door seals (going to try and figure out a way to seal the bottom up good and propper).
So after trying to start it again and nothing it was apparent that I was about to get wet. Now as the water was half way up the door on the outside and about 2" deep inside (maybe about 1ft difference in height) at this stage, opening the door didn't sound too tempting so it was Dukes of hazerd style out the window so I could quickly attached the snatch to the front (should of had it attahced before i went in and then I would have made it through for sure  )
Anyway, I eventually got snatched out (trickey as I was on one side of the steep bank and Outlaw and Steinzy were trying to pull me from the other side and basically pulling me into the hill. We ended up shortening the snatch strap by doubling it back a few time and this seemed to do the trick and I was out.....at last Then we spent the next hour sray9ing WD40 and generally trying to dry her out. Might thing twice about some of the deeper crossings next time but priority is to find out how water got in (as it has a snorkel) and then seal it all up as best I can in case I find the urge to go deep again!!

Bloody good day though and the most damge from one trip, in fact the first real damage from any trip so hopefully that it my damge out of the way for now yeah right!!

Just make sure the ECU is really dry.

Hair dryer or days sitting out drying or both if you got water into it.

    Cheers

sorry to hear your vehicle got wet,
heres a short story, long, years ago I did an offroad typ[e course run by one of those 4wd gurus Vic Widman, we did all sorts of stuff, sand driving , keystarts, winching and water driving, got a great video with the old pajero going through a river with water over the bonnet.
The thing I remember most about water was never assume a hole or crossing is the same each time, always get out and walk it, the reason I remember, is seeing Vic in his speedos wading through each river and hole before we drove through. A sight indeed.
