Thread: replacement (truck?) rear lights for a defender 130?

For me, the old style landy rear lights cap off a beautiful rear end, but that's just me.

I just mounted cheap spotties under the tray. If they break its only $30 and at night they are wonderfull. Also helps when setting up camp at night.

Already have the spotties under the tray (hooked up to a switch on the centre console around the gear sticks that I bought from Coopers. Yes I know that it is a little dodgy to set this up without running through the reverse switch). They work great and I use them regularly. I had them (narvas) lying around for yonks that I never fitted to a previous 4b. They are rectangulay and tuck up nicely well out of harms way.

I loved them as they were but they were too oomphy for my pirhana fuse block when combined with the compressor running at same time (to pump up tyres on trailer in the dark) so I changed the globes to less current draw and now they work perfectly.

A previous set of driving lights I had mounted under there I bought 2nd hand from the LROC Expo a couple of years back. They were AWESOME beasts but at 130W each was probably a bit more light than I needed for reversing! They also really sucked the juice when setting up camp just before switching off for the night - ie when I least wanted to kick my battery in the guts.

As I said the extra rear lightingI fitted is working great for set yup and for reverses in dark quiet places at night without lots of traffic but unlike Ben I am not overly stoked with the original landie lights on the back. They are partially melted, stained, leak dust and water and really not that bright. The wiring always ends up dodgy and I have to clean it up. I also don't like having dim lighting at night and having 3 lights on one side and only 2 on the other.

Have you considered LEDs. I fitted some to a work boat trailer a few years back and they still work perfectly. They are a sealed unit so dust and water cause not problem at all. The other up side is that you will never have to change a light globe ever again, they draw next to no current and are impact resitant. They should easily last the life of the truck.

The down side is that they are expensive. They cost $110 each 5 years ago so they may be cheaper now that been around for a while. I needed one for the tail/brake light and another for the indicator, 4 in total, about $500 worth.

yep LEDs would be my preference. I have been skimming over the Narva website that one_iota suggested.

I have already changed the bayonet globes over to LEDs expecting that this would give me the greatly increased light intensity plus the reduced current draw that I was looking for but the poor sad old landie lenses didn't really seem up to the task. The LEDs replacements work just fine - the way they are supposed to so it is the lenses that are in my sights now!

I may end up with replacing the light panels and using the LED replacement bayonet fittings that I already own otherwise the globes could end up on my box trailer or my camper.
