I ran a Defender (ex UK military) with a spare wheel on the bonnet and one on the rear door. It was quite obtrusive and definately effected airflow through the vents. But it made the truck feel much tougher when looking out over chunky rubber.
It wasn't a TD5, but I did come across this option, specific for TD5s.

    Might be worth a look.

I Must Have It On The Bonnet

I have the bonnet fittings on the Defender I have bought and there will be a spare tyre on there. Period. I know it makes the bonnet heavier to lift, I lifted plenty of IIA and III bonnets in the army and that was only, er, umm, 30 years ago. I realise it might crack the bonnet, but that's fixable and won't stop us getting home. It might affect airflow through the vents, I'll turn up the a/c. It might obstruct forward vision, but I am tall and if they can't see a bloody huge Land Rover with a spare wheel on the bonnet coming at them and get out of my way... well it just wasn't meant to be.

Look, if I was all about practicality, peace of mind and comfort, I wouldn't be buying my 8th Land Rover and second Tdi 300 Defender. It's not about that, it is all about sex, and ego, and living my dreams and feeling as if I belong, have found my place in life and all that stuff. It's one of those, if I have to explain it then you'll never get it kind of things.

Last night my wife replied, when I told her I simply had to buy Mulgo seat rail extensions... "Of course, it's for your Land Rover, buy whatever you want, sell one of the kids if you have to, it's your Defender!" See, a woman who understands. A rare and beautiful thing, gents. That is what the wheel on the bonnet is all about, it's all about the emotion. I will now watch three hours of YouTube videos and get in the zone.

She is Filipina, she has several sisters and dozens of cousins, all of whom love Land Rovers and Aussie Land Rover owners with peso-nality. I am, of course, waiting for the trade-off for her appropriate attitude to all things Defender related. It is going to be horrific, no doubt.

    Defender Bonnet Spare Wheel Carrier

Glad to hear it worked as that is the one I'm going to try!

Paddock also does one that's a bit cheaper and looks more like the original Defender equipment

but I like the idea of not having to get the wheel brace out.

The parts manual states specifically that the 'scissor' bonnet prop shouldn't be used for a bonnet with spare tyre - but that's what the series bonnet used, isn't it?
As mentioned, not legal on later vehicles - would need to be engineered to meet approval (if you can get it)...

Will do wonders for your hinges, front bonnet latch etc... they just arent made for it.... Some luck out some dont.

Certainly wouldn't want a crash with it tearing from the bonnet - you'd be sued to within an inch of your life.
