Disco Series II Traction Control / ABS Problem

    Hi Guys,
    I've recently bought a 2000 SII TD5 Disco and have a problem.

In soft sand and dusty conditions dirt gets onto the ABS wheel sensors and renders the TC useless. Once I hose out the sensors its fine again, but this intermittent fault means the vehicle is hopeless in soft sand and dusty conditions.

Has anyone out there had this problem and how did they fix it?

    Thanks

    Ayresie.

    Hi there,
i had the same problem and i replaced the driver side front abs sensor, after that everything was going good until now. i have this really big brake squeel and it sets my t/c and abs lights off. so to fix it i'm buying the cdl kit,so then you wont really need it.

I would be getting it hooked up to a diagnosis to find out what is exactly wrong with the sensor.

I have a sensor that is running a low voltage error, and works fine for most of the time and then will suddenly throws up an error and will sort itself out again.

I hate the whole ABS/ETC on the Discos/Fenders.

IMHO they are just not made for Australian conditions. Corrugations, dust, mud + electrics do not make for a good combination longer term. It would not be so bad if the price of replacement sensors was reasonable, but when you are talking $1000+ it is ridiculous.

Next time I have a fault, that will be it for the ABS and ETC.

Haultech's ETC can not come soon enough.

You could get ARB Air Lockers fitted I know this is a expensive exercise to have done but you end up with an upgraded diff and if you do a fair amount of off road work when the lockers are engaged it overrides the ETC system and gives it a break so on the tough stuff lock the diffs.
The system components should last twice as long. But you never know when these electrical things will give up.
If you had lockers fitted and your in the thick of it on a rough track and ETC stops working then you still have another back up, lockers to get you out.

That’s just my though and that is why I forked out the money to get ARB lockers fitted as I don’t want to rely on just an electronic system out on the tracks.

Where the hell are you buying your sensors Noddy!...

Sure they are not cheap... but the last one I replaced was a Front sensor it cost me $415 INCLUDING the labour to fit it and little Johnies assorted Taxes...!!! I think the part was a bit under $300.

( And I'm pretty sure the front ones are the expensive ones!!)

So it seems the solution a CLD? What do they cost and does anyone know where in the Brisbane area they are sold?

Makes you wonder why Landrover didn't fit one std.

mmm... depends on what you are trying to fix.

A 2000 model disco has the centre diff lock in the transfer case ( or should)... it just doesn't have a way to activate it from in the car.

When LR went from series 1 to series 2 diisco... they added the traction conntrol - some rocket scientist decided that this meant you didn't need the centre diff lock. WRONG!!!

If you have the diff locked - the traction control will not need to work anywhere near as hard. - this helps in soft sand - as the traction control is actually braking individual wheels - not good in sand.

The issue you talk about with sand blocking the sensors though--- never seen it with mine - maybe I'm just lucky.

Do a search for threads on CDL or Centre Diff LOck.. lots of them here - probably worth you reading them.. Lots of different options for Diff lock kits..

    Cheers, Mark

Hi guys. I think many of you are confusing the poor bloke by talking about lockers and CDL's etc.

Yes they are good, yes they make a difference - however neither of them will help fix the problem he asked in his original question.

The solution to faulty sensors is definately NOT going to be to fit a CDL or lockers

Mate I'd be listening to Noddy's advise before going anywhere near a CDL or lockers.
