Thread: 2a Gearbox, how hard?

As gearboxes go it is pretty simple, and would be a good way to start learning about gearboxes. The manual lists any special tools at the start of each operation. A quick look does not show much needed except for obvious things like feeler gauges and circlip pliers, plus one or two things like a special spanner for the nut on the output shaft of the main box - but you can make this sort of thing fairly easily. Note that there are a number of changes during production - a parts book is worth having to see these, even if you don't need to order parts.

I'll have a go and do my best, if I get stuck I know where to come. Seems I may need some special tools also though as JD has suggested ... I believe there is another tool for aligning the gearbox with the clutch assembly?

Good on you for having a go.
A Clutch alighning tool lines up the splines on the clutch so the gearbox fits first time.They can be bought cheap enough from most auto parts supliers.If you have a spare striped gearbox you can use the input shaft from that to line the clutch splines up.If not a torch and a big screwdriver will do the job.

When I last did a Landrover I used a piece of pipe the size of the pilot bush built up with tape to the ID of the clutch plate. For my tractor a few years ago I turned a tool out of six inches of broom handle, other times I have found a socket the right size...... They all worked perfectly.

If you are going to replace the bearings they are cheap from a bearing shop and get an old electric frying pan fill with oil and heat to 120 degrees
put the new bearing in the oil and heat for 5 min then it will drop onto the shaft no hammering needed. normaly they are tight and not many people have a press in there garage.

Hi simon, i need to strip mine down anyways cause its stuffed, so if you want we can do that in the holidays aswell so we can check it out. You can get basic reconditioning kits for about $130 from Four Wheel Drives, i might see if i can get the cash to buy the kit for the hols and we can rebuild mine first then do yours afterwards.
