    2a Gearbox, how hard?

    G'day fella's.

When I bought my 2a the owner gave me a spare gearbox which was the original and he recommended that during my restoration that I replace it because it had no problems whereas the one that's in there now is missing a tooth in second. I am short on funds right now and so I'm looking to do jobs that won't cost me too much ... I figure I might open up the spare gearbox with nothing wrong with it and give it a strip down to make sure it's A1 but I have little or no mechanical expertise. I have the Green Bible though and am wondering how difficult it would be for a relative novice to strip a 2A gearbox? If I can do the one with nothing wrong then I should be able to fix the gears in second on the other one and have two good boxes on hand. Are there ant special stools I would need etc?

Any advice on this would be apreciated, Simon.

As gearboxes go it is pretty simple, and would be a good way to start learning about gearboxes. The manual lists any special tools at the start of each operation. A quick look does not show much needed except for obvious things like feeler gauges and circlip pliers, plus one or two things like a special spanner for the nut on the output shaft of the main box - but you can make this sort of thing fairly easily. Note that there are a number of changes during production - a parts book is worth having to see these, even if you don't need to order parts.

    Have a go and learn 8) 8) 8)
You have the Green bible so you cant go too far astray.
When I re-built the transfercase in "The Toy" I was having big problems putting the shaft back in.My 8yo(at the time) LEGO EXPERT who was into 14yo Lego at the time came in with priceless words of wisdom."Dad,its easy, you are putting it together back to front, look at that picture there,it goes in the other way around" ops: ops: ops: ops: ops: ops: ops: ops: ops: ops: ops: ops: ops:
The 8 yo is now almost 12,you may be able to hire him as a tech adviser during the school hols to decifer your workshop manual. 8O 8O 8O 8O

    Thanks gents!

I'll have a go and do my best, if I get stuck I know where to come. Seems I may need some special tools also though as JD has suggested ... I believe there is another tool for aligning the gearbox with the clutch assembly?

    Hi Simon
Good on you for having a go.
A Clutch alighning tool lines up the splines on the clutch so the gearbox fits first time. They can be bought cheap enough from most auto parts supliers. If you have a spare striped gearbox you can use the input shaft from that to line the clutch splines up.If not a torch and a big screwdriver will do the job.
    All the best

When I last did a Landrover I used a piece of pipe the size of the pilot bush built up with tape to the ID of the clutch plate. For my tractor a few years ago I turned a tool out of six inches of broom handle, other times I have found a socket the right size...... They all worked perfectly.

If you are going to replace the bearings they are cheap from a bearing shop and get an old electric frying pan fill with oil and heat to 120 degrees
put the new bearing in the oil and heat for 5 min then it will drop onto the shaft no hammering needed. normaly they are tight and not many people have a press in there garage.

Hi simon, i need to strip mine down anyways cause its stuffed, so if you want we can do that in the holidays aswell so we can check it out. You can get basic reconditioning kits for about $130 from Four Wheel Drives, i might see if i can get the cash to buy the kit for the hols and we can rebuild mine first then do yours afterwards. Matt
