Series 3 Stage 1 and Thomas Winch

    Hi

Don't post much but this forum has been able to help in the past. I've got a Series 3, Stage 1 Landrover, (Grumbles) and I'm fitting a Thomas 8000lb PTO winch to it. I have the Power take off etc but running the linkages, particularly under the radiator at the moment is proving interesting.

I'm wondering if anybody has done anything similar and has any tips to share.

I'd stick a picture up but haven't quite figured that out!

    Cheers

    Adrian

    Hi

    Thanks for the replies.

I've added a couple of pics in the gallery.

[edit Phoenix] image is gone in the site shift. Sorry folks.

    Cheers

    Hi Ayroch,

I will ask Cousin John to post a reply here as he had this set up in his SIII Stage 1 now being transferred to his County project. Others (no doubt) will also contribute.

    PTO Winch -stage 1

Yup, I have done this. I found the easiest remedy was to cut approx 2" off the corner of the passenger floor and just a bit off the bottomside of the tranny cover hump. It goes in real easy then and all you need is some sheet lead and sealastic to cover the gap. This comes off no worries should you need to do further work.
I can remember not drilling a single hole anywhere but used existing holes in the chassis and using brackets to hold the pto shaft bearing housings in place.
No pics as I sold the old girl.
    Regards,

recently put one on my county if you want some pics let me know and will take and then post them. County should be similar???, I ended up running the shaft through the front cross member.

My PTO winch has been on 3 landies now, a series 2, stage 1 and now the County. Luckily, when I bought it, it was from a 4 speed Rangie (not common as you would guess) and I found a series gearbox take off for the vehicle I had at the time, I kept the Rangie adaptor and used it on the Stage 1 and county. I can also add some pics if you want. The chassis is a bit different on the County Vs stage 1 as it is coil, not leaf sprung.

Series 3 Stage 1 and winch

    Hi

    Thanks for the replies.

Would love some pics so thanks for the offers.

I've stuck some more pictures up of what the LR actually looks like for interest and a couple more regarding the winch into the gallery(url given above).

I've also figured out how to get some images in the post so please find below. Hope they arent' to big.

    Cheers,

    Adrian

My stage one had the Thomas winch, unfortunately I have the rest of the car but not the chassis, so by memory the drive shaft for the winch went under the front cross member. If I remember correctly the bottom of the cross member had a lip which hung down, this had been cut through with a hacksaw in two places (app 40 mm apart ) then bent up level with the with the bottom of the crossmember to allow the winch drive shaft to sit close to the bottom of the crossmember. This obviously would weaken the crossmember, however it did not appear to be detrimental. My P.T.O was a Thomas unit, so the body work did not need to be altered.

    Gday

Deejay you might have had to cut your floor as the Thomas PTO for the rangie is different to the one for the landrovers even though they are both fit the LT95. I found this out as I have two Thomas PTO's one from a rangie and another from a landrover and couldnt fit the rangie one to my county without trimming the floor so used the other one which fit without trimming. The difference is in how far the drive sits out to the side of the gearbox and the position of the holes to fit the bolts (should have taken pics when they were both out).

Well back to the topic will try and take some pics tomorrow for you and post for all to gaze in wonder at.

    cheers

    PTO unit

    Hi

I had no idea that the LT95 PTO unit for the Range Rover was different than for the County/S3S1. Thanks for that pointer Luke.

I'm not sure which I would have as, while I saw it bolted to the back of an LT95 when I bought it, I don't know what vehicle the gearbox was out of(it was sitting in a trailer at the time).

I've taken a couple of pics of what the Take Off unit looks like. Maybe it can be identified???? It's in bits as I'm in the process of replacing the bearings and seals.

    Cheers

    Adrian

Will get some measurements for you tomorrow so you can work out which one you have.

    Cheers
