    Which Synthetic Auto Oil?

    G'day Guys,

My ZF auto runs warm - just like everyone’s, but as I will be doing some serious towing in the coming months I want to make sure I have the best lubrication in there. I want to put in Synthetic as it does not break down as easy as mineral oil, so in theory should still give good lubrication at high temps. I will also be putting in 1 litre of Moreys - recent convert

I really don’t like Castrol oils - but this is all I can find in my local stores.

Can anyone suggest an oil, based on their experiences in their autos - so Ace pls don't tell me about your sister, boyfriends Masseur experiences with her manual Ford Laser!!!

    THX in advance

whatever you do don't add Moreys to whatever oil you use, it won't need it. Any additive is pretty much a no no, especially in an auto.

Castrol Transmax Z is one of the best ATF's. The only ones that would be as good would be Redline, Neo or Amsoil, and none of those are easy to obtain or even on the same price ballpark. (and I've used Neo and Amsoil in a C6 behind a pretty warm 351 in an F100, and are using Transmax Z in the PS of the 'fender and Patrol)

I wouldnt hesitate to use Moreys if you are looking at running under hot conditions, I have seen Unimog Bull Gears wear very quickly with most oils at 90-100 kmh in 60 degree heat (ground temperature). The addition of Moreys does wonders to thier life expectancy I have always used Moreys under extreme temperatures and rept the benefits. A warning though if you exceed 20% ratio of Moreys to Gear Oil you WILL kill things evidently it is to do with enveloping hot air if you go too high in the mix ratio.

Transmax Z was recommended by my transmission rebuilder for towing or beach work. Cheapest place to buy it is from a Castrol Distributor, paid just under $50 for 4 liters (need 2 of)

I have used Transmax Z in my Disco's. Not cheap but its brilliant. Smooth changes under all conditions, particuarly when towing. Stuck it in the power steering as well.

I just changed mine to Transmax Z , seeing my ZF had to be empied to fix a leaking oil pump.
If you google ZF 4HP22 you will find the ZF site which gives all approved lubricants. Transmax Z is on that list. I would NOT use anything that is not on the list.
Just remember that unless you flush the torque converter and cooler, you only change half of the ATF( 4 litres)
I saw a post on a US site which suggests undoing a cooler connection , starting up and emptying 1 litre, stopping and filling and so on.

Seems that Transmax Z is popular - is there are reason you really don't like Castrol oils?

What about a fully synthetic from other manufacturers?

I wouldnt have a problem putting Moreys in a manual box or diff - I had great results with it in my tractor engine as well but would be VERY hesitant to put it in an auto, especially a ZF. Autos are very particular about the type and composition of fluid they require......

Mark if your going to be towing alot then i'd suggest you invest in an oil cooler, best thing you can do to an auto, helps over heating issues they have when towing.
