    GVM to Kerb Weight

    Hello All,

    If a truck made in Australia is plated as having a GVM of 8400 Pounds - which converts to 3.9 Metric Tonnes what would a probable Kerb Weight be?

    What do you think the likelihood of such a truck being able to be legally carried on a 3.5 tonne car trailer towed by a vehicle rated at 3.5 tonnes towing capacity would be?

    Yes, the only definitive way is to get it weighed at a weighbridge. In the interim a ball park figure would be good to have.

    According to Carsguide the following weight related terms are:

    Kerb Mass or Weight

    This is the same as Tare Mass, but with a full tank of fuel and without any accessories fitted (bull bars, tow bars, roof racks etc). Think of it as your standard vehicle literally parked at the kerb and ready for you to get in and drive away.

    Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) or Weight (GVW)

    This is the maximum your vehicle can weigh when fully loaded as specified by the manufacturer. You will usually find this GVM figure on the vehicle's weight placard (generally found in the driver's door opening) or in the owner's manual. So GVM is the Kerb Mass plus all accessories (bull bars, roof racks, winches etc) and payload (see below). And if you're towing something, GVM includes the Tow Ball Download.

    Depends on the type of truck - but by way of example.

    My 101 has a Tare of just under 2 Tonne and a GVM of just over 3.5 Tonne

    So your vehicle will be most likely over 2 Tonne Tare - trailer will be about 1 Tonne so you might just squeeze under your 3.5t tow limit.

    what vehicle, you should be able to google it and get a rough idea from just the make and model.


    you could get a rough guess by comparing it to other known vehicles of similar sizes, dimensions, capacities and capabilities.

    based on the international 1210 dual cab 4x4 in 3/4t configuration kerb mass will be in the vicinity of 2700KG.

    but lets worse case it...

    it weighs 3.9T and the worst configuration I could find provides a payload of ~1200lb which is just past 500kg (rounded down to a number that makes it worse for us to use here)

    3.9-.5=3.4

    you should be able to get it on a car trailer rated to load a 3.5t vehicle. But you wouldn't tow that combination behind a vehicle rated to only 3.5T towed load

    best case is that it tips in at 2.7T. Most trailers with a GTM of 3.5 kerb in at nearly 1t so 2700KG isnt going to go on legally.

    If you started a weight reduction on it, (its dually so pull 2 wheels off the rear, pull the seats, pull the battery, drain the fuel, drop the spare, basically everything thats easily removed thats included in the Tare mass) and put that stuff in the back of the tow vehicle and you'd pull it off.
