Series Diesel Engines Sleeved or Not?

    Hello All,

Can someone clarify if Series Land Rover Diesel 2.25 litre motors were fitted as standard with piston cylinder sleeves or not?

I just found a Turner Engineering product in the United Kingdom ... engine sleeves ERC 9188 Cylinder Liner

It is hard to know from their description whether sleeves were fitted as standard by Land Rover; or if the Turner Engineering sleeves are a new alternative when they suggest.... If you have run out of options on oversize pistons or bore (s) are damaged.then fit this liner and bore/hone to standard size

I have not taken the head off a Series Land Rover yet. I do have one 2.25 litre diesel that was blowing smoke out the exhaust pipe well before I bought it. Then the clutch died and the vehicle was parked up.

Is it still possible to buy a re-build kit for a 2.25 litre Series 3 motor? Just trying to ascertain alternatives - not much point starting if the necessary parts for a rebuild are now unobtainium. Or they cost that much that there are cheaper replacement alternative engines that would be more financially sensible to undertake. Apparently even the more modern 200tdi is becoming hard to get some parts for. Similarly, the 300tdi and reliable replacement heads are difficult to source.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Lionel,
They are not sleeved. Turner Engineering are offering a way of saving a block that's been bored to the max by them boring & fitting sleeves to get it back to STD.

Parts are available to rebuild **itpart supply pistons and I'm sure Bearmach would as well. Plus there is the option of NOS if you are lucky. and an engine rebuilding company can often locate older parts through their network. Shell bearings are much the same.

200TDi's are more difficult to source parts for, 300TDi's are OK including replacement heads (haven't heard of any issue with replacement heads).

Another option is a s/h engine that someone else has removed to fit an alternative engine. An element of luck here as it's difficult to know the condition of the internals without stripping down.

nope cast block with holes drilled in it.

the sleeves are used when the bore goes oversized from damage (or even holed) but the crank journals are still in spec.

the bores are machined out to a larger size, the sleeve is then pressed in and finally remachined to take a stock piston size.

both the petrol and diesel engine respond well to having the liners pressed in and can be set up to take top hat or pinned liners if you choose.

the fitting process is an interference fit although I have heard tell of the liners being fitted by heating the block and freezing the liners. It works on small engines so in theory should work on the 2.25

and yes, parts are easily available for the 2.25 I've got 2 rebuilds on hand at the moment and am setting up for a diesel build in the near future.

    Hello Colin,

Thanks for the information. In regards to 300tdi heads from what I have heard from a number of sources is that there is difficulty in getting replacement heads that are not warped. Also that even brand new replacements made as clones are frequently failing. FIgures worse than the Ancient Mariner - who at least ... "stoppeth one in three".

I have yet to explore the bowels of the engine. As you suggest, I do have a spare motor - however it is of unknown condition. I bought it off a bloke who was going to transplant it into another vehicle that had a petrol motor. Hopefully since it was going to be the donor for the project, it could be in good condition. I am not sure whether the previous owner actually ever had the motor running.

My hesitancy on starting on pulling down the smokey motor 2.25 litre diesel has been through taking the time to explore alternatives. Also to find out if parts on the 2.25 are still readily available. Which you and Dave have answered.

Now, I am waiting on one interstate source - who is proving to be very unreliable - to get back to me regarding an alternate motor. However, there is a family connection so one must be patient... apparently - sigh!

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Just to complete the information above - the 2.0l diesel fitted to Series 1&2 Diesels from 1957 to 1961 is in fact sleeved from the factory - with wet sleeves.

Very few of these engines will be found today, most were replaced by 2.25 engines by the 1970s, if not earlier.

    Hello John,

Thank you for clarifying about the 2.0 Land Rover diesels having wet sleeves.

    Kind regards
