I just had the Datatron coolant level sensor fitted that Graeme Cooper stock - $165.00 for the kit. Works for me:

    Info from manufacturer:
    Coolant Level Monitor
The Datatron Coolant Level Monitor is an effective
way to monitor coolant level in your vehicle.
Applications include all industrial vehicles, automotive
vehicles and stationary engines. This monitor, which
has a unique probe design, can save you money on
unnecessary engine repairs and provides you with the
peace of mind that your coolant level is being
    checked.
    HOW IT WORKS FOR YOU
The EL Series Coolant Level Monitor is designed and
    made in Australia. Features include:
    • Reliable operation assured by a ‘self check’ alarm
    • Multi voltage – 12-24 volt
•A high frequency signal sounds and a relay is
activated once the coolant level drops below the
    sensor in the radiator
    • Unique ‘Anti-Slosh’ control eliminates false alarms
    • Unique design of the stainless steel probe prevents
residue build up and allows monitor to operate
    under extreme conditions
    • The unit is protected against reverse polarity
    • An AC signal on the probe prevents scale or other
deposits building up on the probe
    • A slosh filter detects and averages outs
fluctuations in coolant level due to movements in
    the vehicle
•Sensing is not affected by coolant additives
    • Easy to install
•Can be integrated with the full engine
    protection system
    • Can be used in many applications where
    fluid level is critical
•3 metre lead to the probe
    • Compact design (57 x 51 x 40mm)
    • A fail safe circuit will sound the alarm in the case
of a broken lead on the sensor connection. Also a
self check function sounds the alarm each time you
    start your engine

Will, you have installed an "enginesaver" model on a tdi. Did the sensor fit in the top hose OK as per the instructions on their website ?

the one I recently had fitted on my 98 disco tdi gives a 'beep' when you start up to indicate coolant present and system working. The alarm is activated when coolant drps below sensor which is mounted high up in radiator----dont know the brand but can find out if anyone interested. It is reassuring to have system confirmed each time u start up.

Only problems I see with these in a defender is hearing the beep. You need a blig flashing light on the bonet. Maybe like they use on oversized loads? you'd never hear a beep or buzzer.

From what I have seen on this forum, the tdi engine can seize up fairly quickly on coolant loss. For a tdi sounds like the low coolant level alarm would give the best "early warning".

The robotronics one looks interesting, how do u set it though ! because i assume all engines run at different temps !!!

I think the simple one might be the best...
