Spare wheel winch.

I have an RWC but as I get older am finding it harder to get the wheel up there to refit it in the event of a puncture. Luckily that hasn't happened for a while but I'm forward planning and want to fit a simple hand winch (with removable handle) to lift it up rather than struggle myself.
There's plenty on the market but what to choose? Any recommendations from others who have had the same problem?

... but getting one up onto a wheel carrier is getting beyond me.

I just use the shovel to lift the wheel onto the studs as it's just an inch or so. I'm actually debating whether to chuck out the RWC and returning it to the standard position as I've already installed a Tuffant winder mod to make that easier. I've made a removable frame thing to hold a small hand winch above the spare but may buy something from a boat/trailer part yard and see how we go..... if it won't hold the weight I'll just scrap the idea altogether and junk the RWC.

Mods. Please return this thread to the "general area" as I'm not asking technical questions just want to know what others have done and if they recommend certain winches. Seems obvious from the lack of answers virtually no one checks this section unless they're desperate.

I bought the smallest winch I could get from BCF for about 60 bucks and will mount it on the "thing" I've already made, today. Then the big test and if it fails or the support isn't strong enough I haven't lost much and I may stick the spare back under the vehicle as I said before.
The Rigidig RWC will be rehomed or dumped down the back of the shed.

Success. I fitted the winch to the bracket I made to hold it and it works great. So the RWC is staying where it is as the system is attached to the back of it. A bit of fine tuning tomorrow and it should be really good. I'm making it removable as I don't like leaving stuff attached on the outside of the car for thieving bastards to take off.... actually I never leave anything on the rack etc which is easily pinched.

OK. Job nearly done. No dimensions as they will vary according to what you're attaching it to. But I did make the winch gantry about 65cms long to allow it to be raised more to allow better control when reattaching the tyre. I also made it so it swings around in the round tube as well for the same reason.
Round upright tube is ally and gantry (I'll call it that 'cos I like it) is approx. 25mm steel square tube. I've turned it sideways for travel as I'll leave it attached and put a keeper bolt through to hopefully make it a bit harder to nick..... I've also removed the handle for the same reason.
When I need to use it I'll remove the keeper bolt, lift the tube/winch and then slip the bolt back through it's locating hole and the winch can then rest on it and swivel around.
Total cost with welding of tubing and the steel tube, plus winch about 120 bucks all up. Nuts and bolts from the shed.
No doubt I'll fiddle a bit tidying things up and repainting etc but overall I think it'll work quite well and take the strain off my back.

Plus my dearly beloved Cook can use it as well.

PS. Spacer between tube and RWC was a bit of jarrah cut and painted to fit with just enough room for the device not to touch the rear screen wiper.

PPS. It'll be a stretch to the handle for those who are a bit on the wee side but stand on the wifes shoulders and she'll be right.
