Sounds great, I need my 8" offset steel Rangie rims doing as the paint is lifting off in sheets and chipping around centre, becoming unsightly.

I'll have to try & co ordinate between trips to Sydney some how. Will ring first.

    Thanks for the info.

Or I remember years ago seeing a Stage 1 Isuzu with dip galvanised wheels - which is, of course, the ultimate in protection. And can be painted, although these ones weren't.

If you dip galvanize something and want it painted, 1st you have to have it lightly blasted, then put a certain type of paint on that will stick to gal the best, then prime, then top coat. Which of course will cost "alot" more, and thats after the cost of galvanizing it. And gal coating can still be scratched and rust like any other paint surface. It all comes down to what you want and how many $$$ you want to spend. Personally, I would stick to the simple, blast, prime, top coat. Also makes it easier to repair if you do damage anything.

You don't have to "lightly blast" galvanising - just use the correct etch primer same as aluminium. And the advantage of galvanising over any other coating is that it not only electrolytically protects the surface even if scratched through, but is self healing for small scratches.

Having said this, I agree that galvanising is a bit of overkill for wheels unless you are driving regularly in salt water (as the one I saw was apparently doing, launching boats).

We paint alot of galvanised jobs and they all require light blasting to create a good profile for the etch primer to stick too.
