Disco Tdi - Manual Or Auto ?

Thinking about replacing the rangie with a tdi disco 97- 98 model, i have got used to an auto after 15 years of manuals, i have heard that auto tdi's help with the turbo lag down low but will i be dissapointed ? is a manual better for a diesel ? which is better for city driving ? i have seen a 97 tdi auto with 188k on the clock for under $12k and looks good ? i have friends with both so will get a drive of each soon to check for myself but jwould just like some feedback.

    thanks,
    nick.

way better at everything but falling off a hill and if you put the maxidrive low range gear in, that isnt a worry either...

Had a tdi manual and did alot of city driving, found the clutch to be so heavy. For an easier city drive Auto every time.

My brother inlaw had a Auto tdi at the same time I had my manual tdi and from memory there was not much difference in fuel usage on a trip we did together.

Go the auto with a tweak to the fuel etc, and you wont believe what a great combination they are, would never worry about a manual again.

Fuel usage difference would be negligable, in fact since my auto service and tweak, it goes a lot better and uses less fuel

I'm a happy disco diesel auto driver

I have a manual and it is heavy around the city. I go with the consensus - get the auto. If you wan't to go upmarket to an ES model I think that is the only choice anyway.

Definitely go the Auto. As said it helps overcome the inherent turbo lag. Uprate the turbo if you can, It makes an even bigger difference to reducing the lag.
