Are disco/defender transfer cases the same thing

I realise the gearing is different but could you grab a Discovery II transfer case and whack it straight in a Defender - are they the same item??

Just remembered some Disco boxes dont have CDL??

thanks lads - trying to decide whether to put an overdrive in the car or to just change the transfer case gearing - reason I ask is it would be cheaper to just whack in a Disco case as opposed to getting the gearing put in my existing one.

def lt230 has 1.4/1 high range, if you fit the disco one and you run 32's or higher you may find your take off will suffer.

Can I suggest you go to 255/85r16 tyres. This will give the gearing effect of having disco high range transfer gears.

I have put defender 1.4 high range gears in my disco and now wish I never had. I think it just runs too many revs at highway speeds.

John D - I run 15 inch rims and am looking at ways to reduce rpm on the freeway and the pretty useless 1st gear ratio in the Defender.

Was going to look at just re-gearing my existing transfer case the the Disco high range gears but thought it might be just as cheap to get a second hand transfer case from a Disco.

Is the low range gearing in the Disco case different to Defender low range gearing in terms of ratio?

I think jddisco has a good point.

I've only had my defender for a week now, and the greatest surprise was just how low the gearing was, it's the same as the gearing in my 2.25 SIII for RPM at a given speed.

I don't think it's got the power to effectively drive an overdrive in all gears, but slightly taller tyres would give it the 10% or so that it requires.

I think it's worth borrowing some taller tyres and trying them out before spending time and money on the transmission. A bit like the Stage 1 SIII High Cap. utes thats came with 900x16 tyres instead of 7.50x16.

Disco II T/cases don't have a speedo drive on them, not sure if Defenders do. I had to get the speedo drive retrofitted when I updated the T/case in my Classic Rangie.
