    Removable Winch Mount?

I am trying to decide if I want to get a hand or electric winch.
Has anybody ever made or seen a mount so that the winch can be taken off the front and put on the back?
I was thinking about a mount for a Hayman Reese towbar, but would 1 be strong enough or would you need to centre it between 2?
I guess a front hitch could be made up to go between the 2 front chassis rails. That way you could just have a flat plate for the winch to sit on and that welded to a HR tounge (or 2).
I hope the power could be hooked up through Anderson plugs, with a set in front and back.
Anybody have any ideas or know where I could get this fabricated?

    Thanks
    Andrew

It should work fine off the HR tow point, and fitting one to the front shouldn't be a real drama. Front tow points have been effectively used without dramas, provided they are properly braced.

Another option would be to have the winch mounted on a plate with D-Shackles that allow one end to be connected to front or rear recovery points (by chain); the other end goes to where ever the cable goes to.

As for battery connections, consider using welding lead plugs. These are h/duty brass connectors that attach directly to battery cable. Female plugs on the vehicle and male plugs on the winch. I've seen this set up in the snow fields, with the female plugs on the bumper of roadside recovery vehicles, they just plugged their jumper leads into them!! We also used the same at work when I did tree stump removal, for connecting a tipper trailer to the tow vehicle (to power the tipper). This gives a cable supply from the battery to the apperatus without any voltage drop.

    OR

You could try a centrally mounted winch with rollers to take the cable out the front, back or sides, like the 101FC!!!!

By the time you engineer a winch to mount independant front and rear you could by 2 winch and fit one to each end. There are some winch cradles on the market that can be placed in a haymon reese style tow bar. all good but you will need to make a mount for the front and then have the pproblem of lifting and moving the thing. The general weight of an 8000 pnd winch is about 38 kg plus the cradle.

Mount your winch in the front and you will save yourself effort and money.

...Or buy a Turfor, save money, mount it front & rear, use it on another car, in the garden, etc...

Brawn has a portable winch you can buy already done

But they are bloody expensive... we looked at one as a club winch. You're probably better going with Discoute's suggestion of 2 winches.

On the other hand... i have seen some things online about using the HR to fit to front and back so worth doing a google .

Alternatively... i can't see why you couldn't get some winch extention straps and maybe 3 winch blocks to redirect your winch pull to the rear in certain cases

actually after rereading that port-a-winch page... it could be done cheaper... it's $800 for the cradle... but can always put a cheaper winch then they offer into it and does give the benefit of winching sideways etc.

I think Brawn 4x4 are closed down. Not sure if they have stopped trading or what.

    Thanks for the replies.
I think I will probably make a cradle with a H/R hitch and also with the D shackles for the front
