Fabricating Jerry Can holders for inside a ute

Hi all. Would like to fab up some diesel jerry can holders from alloy sheet. The holders will sit next in the passenger side of the tub of the ute and be bolted through the floor of the tub and also to the side rail of the ute. 2 x holders, allowing upright storage and for one can to sit behind the other so that both holders bolt to the side rail (ie 2 individual holders). I will make the rail side of the holder nice and high but i would like the side facing the ute tray to only have a lip of a few inches to allow easy loading of full diesel jerry cans. I will possibly secure the cans with a cam strap or a lever lock steel strap. Even better might be a hinged clamshell type design allowing tbe jerry can to be pushed into position (the can can sit on the rubber mat or a false wooden floor of i opt for that) and then the hinged section can close around the can and lock into place with adjustable cam action fasteners.

Any ideas or tips on the best way to fabricate these (rubber padding, no padding, general design etc including gauge of alloy) will be appreciated. I will TIG the parts up once I cut them up (angle grinder with cutting tip).

    Cheers!

Mate I haven't seen any that have a door/rail on the side that do away with having to lift the cans (this is all in a canopy and trying to make life easier). Will keep looking however. Cheers

These have no lip at all. You can get this style in Dunne and Watson in Stainless Steel however the cam lever isn't in the best plane on those IMO.

I only carry a jerry , it seems , for someone elses needs. I have never used it myself.

I made a very simple carrier out of timber which is all butt screwed and I can put it wherever it suits on my tray , screwed down with solid self drilling screws and the jerry is held in place by a couple of saddles and a shortened tie down strap.

I seem to always be changing my loading unless I use my drawers. I have a number of combinations including ally boxes and various positions for my fridge.

My tray is developing a few holes , but it works for me.

Other option would be 2 tie down rails.
One along the edge the other on the floor of the tray

Place J-Cans in position and ratchet down.

Lot more versatile and less weight

I like that Mike. I went plastic diesel cans a while back. Steel would work well ratcheting down but plastic may not be as amenable. Cheers
