is this (pointing) because of the way the LR pre-combustion charge swirls in the chamber?
    (plugs dark and white)

I did this on my last race motor (L20B,) with platinums, only faced them TOWARDS the inlet,,

either used to point the gap in between the valves or towards the exhaust with the earth electrode at the 'back' of the chamber in the engines I did it in. Never played with a Rover V8, can't even remember what the chamber looks like.
In a pushrod engine the plug is usually so far to the edge of the chamber that pointing towards the inlet, exhaust or in between doesn't matter, at the least the spark and flame front isn't shrouded by the earth electrode as it propogates across the chamber....well at least that's what I used to tell myself when I did it.
Does it work ?? dunno, never actually dynoed it, but it can't hurt.

Did some funny stuff with modifying plugs (from another engine) in a race motor with a poor combustion chamber design to overcome the severe amount of advance that needed to be used and that definately worked. Able to pull over 10* advance out and pick up power and torque.
