    Fuel guage problems

    Hi,

My 1995 300Tdi fuel guage is not working properly. I've checked the wiring and the earth but can't seem to resolve the issue.

When the tank is full it reads full for about the first 200km. After which it begins to lose consistency and will drop to half or even to empty and the fuel warning light comes on.

First time it happened I thought I had holed the tank or busted a fuel line. However once you refuel it works fine again.

I haven't removed it from the tank as yet, without some idea of what to do when I get it out I will let it be until I have a decent amount of time to break it.

How do they work and how can I possibly fix this. I realise I could replace it with a new one but looking for another solution.

    Cheers Pete

Hi sounds like fuel sender unit. take it out of the side of the tank ,connect the wires back up and move the float manually. get someone to watch the gauge while you are moving it . it will tell you if it works correctly. If its not working buy a new sender unit,

    I suspect that normal is:

At full tank I get 100 to150 km before the needle descends to "F" then I expect to get 450 to 500 km by the time the guage hits halfway.

The last quarter only gives me 100 km before the yellow light comes on.

A total of about 750 km.

to test the fuel sender unit......remove it from the tank......
and connect your multimeters to it......on the resistance setting....

the sender unit it simply a variable resistor.......by slowly moving the sender through its travel.....
you should notice a steady increase or decrease in resistance value.....
what you are looking for is a smooth change......if the readings are jumpy
this means it is not making contact or shorting out.....in other words its worn out.....

oh.....and its best not to remove the sender unit with a full tank......

Yeah, my X1/9 does that, works fine to half way (down) then goes straight to empty, but its italian. The gauge in the disco doesn't work at all.....but the one in the Falcon is very accurate.....
