those prices still sound a bit steep.....
all they do to reco a starter is change the bearings and spray it black.....
yours may have a broken spring or burnt out solenoid.....

depending on the honesty and profit margin of your electrician....it shouldnt cost too much....
especially seeing as you have done most of the job.....

It appears to have the spring that keeps the pinion out of engagement broken - also needs a new pinion, and while he is at it, probably replace the contacts in the solenoid. Appears to be nothing wrong with the motor, although I assume he will also look at the brushes and commutator. I suppose there is the possibility that some of the bearings (motor, idler or output - there seems to be a total of four ball bearing races and one parallel roller race, so if all are replaced at maybe $20 each there's $100!) need replacing.

But certainly the repairs to the starter should be a lot less than the reconditioned one. There is a tendency today to simply replace this sort of thing today when often it is (much) cheaper to simply repair the actual problem. (and some of the overhaul jobs are not too good for that matter!)

Got the starter back this afternoon. $235, to replace the "clutch assembly". I was rather surprised that he had the part on hand, but apparently this engine is quite common.

So the County should be going tomorrow. I have been replacing the exhaust manifold gasket, which was leaking. The manifold had come loose - other Isuzu owners might want to check the tightness of the bolts. Not a big job, but a few other things have to come off to get it off. As usual everything to do with the exhaust was rusty, so I saturated all the bolts and nuts with penetrating oil, which is now all over the manifold - going to smell great when I start it!

The problem is that the spring in the "clutch assembly" on the starter is not pulling the pinion right back, and if I stop with the nose downhill or apply brakes it is touching the ring gear. When it does this it simply spins on the free wheel except when the engine kicks back as it stops, it spins the starter backwards, which is what makes the noise. It has neatly trimmed the teeth back by about five millimetres, although the starter works perfectly normally.

Does anyone know if you can pull the "clutch assembly" apart? The manual's exploded diagram shows it as one item, so I suspect not. Also, does anyone know if you can get the "clutch assembly", and what it costs, or is the alternative an exchange starter and any ideas for costs on that?

    John,

    Try

    www.aea.com.au

When my truck is back on the road I will be visiting a South Australian Alternator and Starter wholesaler to match up a suitable Alternator for a rig like ours. (AAE)

At the same time I will be enquiring about a Starter so I will update you when that takes place. Approx 1-2 weeks when I get my Landy Back.

From my understanding a starter can be easily sourced, however an alternator for the 85's is a challenge.

Let us know how you progress, as I will do likewise.

    Regards,
