    110 Isuzu starter

I have had a loud "clank" on switching off my 110 for some time. I finally tracked it down to the starter, and pulled it off today.

The problem is that the spring in the "clutch assembly" on the starter is not pulling the pinion right back, and if I stop with the nose downhill or apply brakes it is touching the ring gear. When it does this it simply spins on the free wheel except when the engine kicks back as it stops, it spins the starter backwards, which is what makes the noise. It has neatly trimmed the teeth back by about five millimetres, although the starter works perfectly normally.

Does anyone know if you can pull the "clutch assembly" apart? The manual's exploded diagram shows it as one item, so I suspect not. Also, does anyone know if you can get the "clutch assembly", and what it costs, or is the alternative an exchange starter and any ideas for costs on that?

If you find a good exchange price let us know as I may be in need of a starter shortly as well.

What is wrong with yours? The only previous problem I have had with this starter is the solenoid contacts - and these are available, cheap and easy to replace, hardly reason for replacing the starter.

    starter

I would assume it is a genuine Land Rover starter if it is you can get parts no problems. Range Parts in sydney 02 9896 2355 ask for peter. It also could be an Isuzu 12V starter from a late 80,s truck ( as I have in mine ) which any good auto elec can source parts for you.

    Good luck.

The starter is both a genuine Landrover part and a genuine Isuzu part. I don't have a Landrover part number but the Isuzu and Nippon Denso part numbers are on it. Could not do anything today, but will start on the phone tomorrow, but I will be surprised if I can get anything local, although I guess you never know.

Talked to a Dubbo auto electrician (Robbie Cook) who says he can fix it, probably the day he gets it, although he can't tell for sure until he pulls it to bits and finds out what needs replacing. He thinks he has the parts for it, but if not will have to order them in. So I will send it in with my next door neighbour who is going into town tomorrow.

As in last post, the starter is going in to town, hopefully to be fixed, tomorrow. Meanwhile I have located a reconditioned exchange starter in Canberra for $630 (I am going to Yass for next weekend) but I hope to get away for a lot less than this.
