It can be left in but the whole front will need to come off the car and the engine so you have room to pull the cam out, wont warranty cover that for such a new car ?

yep, it's still under warranty and I've been trying to get this sorted for 13 months now. Had the heads re-done as there was a leaking valve stem seal from the day i bought it, then when I picked it up the engine had a ticking noise (about 4 ticks per second on idle) so they replaced the lifters and now the ticking noise is still there and I get occasional pinging under light load. I am only guessing the cam may need replacing and I suppose while they are at it they should do the rockers also?. It only has 55ooo on the clock.

HI, I read in one of your earlier posts that u have a tick noise at the rate of about 4 per second and the dealer can't fault, Is there any chance that the noise it just the fuel injectors, some vehicles have quite abit of noise coming from the injectors, and on occasion has been thought to be a fault when in fact it is normal, But if the noise is more of a metal on metal sound then it most likely wouldn't from be the injectors.

Have you tried using a metal rod and placing one end on various parts of the motor and putting your ear to the other end to locate where the ticking is coming from?

It's definately mettalic. It seems to be coming from the passenger side valve cover. Given the lifters are new and the heads have just been recond I can only guess it is cam related. But of course I am a complete novice. The noise seems to fade out when you rev the engine but that may also be the additional noise drowning it out.

Could be the cam, if the lobes were worn so much that the hydralic lifters couldn't take up the slack, but on a motor with 55k very unlikely, but never say never

    ******,
At this stage I would write to LRA and bring it to their attention and seek policy if a major problem arises outside warranty., but seeing it will do no harm, I would live with it for a while. It could be a noisy injector.

Being aluminium the engines will always be noisier than cast iron , which damps a lot of noise.

My engine for example has audible piston slap when cold, but I would expect it to last hundreds of thousands of miles accidents permitting.
So just enjoy the car and drive it.
    Regards Philip A

Thanks Phillip, I was hoping you would jump in at some stage also. I guess I could live with the ticking but the real concern to me is the apparent pinging. Would or could the pinging be related to a cam related issue? Given the heads have just been re-done I would like to think they have not coked up so soon (say 400kms ago).
