    Extra Gauges

What extra gauges would everyone recommend for a Defender?

Mine's got a Tacho already, but I was thinking :

    • Oil Pressure
    • Boost (not quite sure what this tells me yet, (I'm new to turbos) but I think there are some diagnostic implications which would make fault finding easier.
    • Volts

I can't tell by the avatar what sort of def you have. For all types, a boost gauge is good for an easy fit - you only need a extra t-piece to run it, and it's only air coming in. Using the boost gauge lets you know how hard you are pushing the engine - less boost, less fuel used.

As to volts - depends on how you use accessories

Oil - provided it is an electronic version and you can find the proper t-piece to fit it next to the standard one, then OK ( A further back up to tell if you overheat). Rigging the old fashioned type with an oil line into the dash isn't the best idea.

A 110 not a Defender, and I'm not sure what gauges the current Defender has - as standard I have speedo, fuel, volts and temp (and clock). The only one I have considered necessary to add is a gauge for the auxiliary fuel tank, but have thought about adding oil pressure, vacuum and possibly tacho and gearbox temperature. But all of these are really for interest rather than really being needed.

Id also be adding a pyrometer, Its a gauge that tells you how hot your exhaust is. Good for letting you know how hot you turbo is before shutting down or how hard your working the engine.

I got the dual gauge mount from Autobarn and trimmed the top mounting of the gauge panel to match the edge of the panel. (the top mounting is quite wide to take screws). I then held it in postion and drew the two holes to be cut out. Using a hole saw, cut the one nearest the steering wheel first, then fit a gauge to hold it in place. Using the gauge plate as a guide for the hole saw, cut the second hole. This ensures you get the holes perfectly positioned. The gauges then clamp the plate to the dash giving it a neat appearance. I was not going to use the gauge mounting panel initially, but the dash has a foam type covering and cutting a clean hole is nearly impossible. When I clamped a gauge into position without the panel mount, the dash spread around the bezel.

    Guages

Mine already has a Tacho up in the dash in the right hand side. Clock has been relocated to the cigarette lighter panel. Next will come a pyrometer (Exhaust Gas Temp) which is a must for understanding how hard the engine and Turbo is working. Additionally a low level coolant alarm and probably a multi battery monitor guage from BEP marine to monitor both battery charge and discharge rates.

    Cheers,
