Maxi-drive, McNamarra and ARB all work as advertised.
I also think the McNamarra locking mechanism using the side gear is better than Maxi-drive, which uses a special half shaft with a spline for the locking mechanism.
ARB use o-ring seals in their actuator. This lets them down and oil leaks are common.
The Maxi-drive actuator uses vacuum. The advantage is, that no compressor is required. One disadvantage is the actuator is large and must be outside the diff housing.
MacNamarra no longer use vacuum actuators.
The main disadvantage of Maxi-drive IMHO, is for a front locker they are too slow to disengage, because of the vacuum actuator. If you haven't driven with a front locker engaged, you may not fully apreciate the need to unlock it quickly (some situations can become dangerous - at least risky).
As for fitting yourself. Most people (without Salisbury experience and welding skills) would be better off getting an experienced person to fit Maxi-drive lockers. It can be difficult to remove the carrier from a Salisbury. And cutting and welding is required, because the vacuum actuator is outside.

Thanks for those posts eveyone, now I know how much of an advantage difflocks can be in challenging terrain, but are these axles/diff combination really that much stronger than my standard County gear?. Also, if Mal retires, I guess there are no garantees on the spare parts front. Am I likely to require spares in my lifetime?, with moderate use-no competition, as I wont sell the vehicle. Thanks again.

Mals axles (as are Jack Mc's) are much stronger than Land Rover OE (and I know of a few 110/130's that have snapped OE Sals axles) but the rest of the diff is bullet proof, and your County doesn't suffer the dreaded worn spline problem of later 110/130's as the hubs are diff oil lubed.

Maxi-drive all the way. i don't think spares will be a problem. and how many people have needed spares for there maxi-drive stuff???
when he sells his business i doubt that the new owners will go changing designs and even if they do they have to carry spares for older stock.
i have maxi-drive rear and 49%low range and soon to be MD front when i sort out what cv's i'll be using. i will keep buying mals products with confidence

Thanks everyone, I'll have a chat to Mal when I get back in OZ, I guess Britsh Off Road are the best to fit them.
