    Rangie Speedo Drive

    I've had enough
I'm on my 3rd speedo drive, and it's just pooped itself.
That's got to be the worst engineered contraption known to man.
I've cleaned, sprayed, greased, gold plated, krypton impregnated it for the last time.
I'm not interested in forking out another $130.

So has anyone retrofitted another dash to an early Rangie?
The later Rangie ones are electric, aren't they?
    Will they fit?
Is there a cable to an electronic sensor, or does the sensor bolt to the gearbox?
Can the tacho run from the coil instead of the alternator?

Or is there a retrofit off another type of vehicle that is simple to do (and better than a Rangie)?

I remmber having that problem too. In the end a genuine speedo cable cured it--til then I had tried a cheap immitation and the turning resistance of the cable was too much for the speedo units to handle.....a genuine cable is not cheap but not aqs dear as a new speedo drive.

I have an instrument binnacle from, (I am pretty sure!!) a 92 rangie to go into my 84 rangie, when I can get around to that. Bolts into the same space as the original, with only requiring splicing the new plugs to the existing wires.

This has an electronic speedo. Has a short speedo cable between the speed sensor and the speedo drive from the t/case.

I once saw an early rangie at All Four X 4 spares (a customer's vehicle), which had a complete disco dash in it.

there was a NOS electric complete clock setup for a 1989+ Rangie on ebay the other week for $50!!!

I had a problem with my speedo bouncing around so took out the driver and was told to punch both of the discs - it tightens up the cogs and now works fine.

    Yep, saw that.
    It's in mph though.

    Done that too.

Does anyone know which gear is the problem?
They all "look" OK, so I don't actually know what's wrong (except the gears don't mesh and slip).

I suppose I could mix and match them to see if I can get 1 good one out of the three, but if it's the same gear on each, then I'm no better off.

have you lubed up the cable? could the driver on the transfer be causing it?

My problem is the meshing of the gears within the drive unit.

    They slip.

I've tried compressing the end caps so the shafts are tight. - No good.
I've applied grease to the gears. - No good.
I've cleaned them, and kept them dry. - No good.

The cable is about 3 years old, and spins freely.

They are just poor quality, and I'm not going to buy another one.

Speed I can judge using the tacho, but I rely on the odometer to calculate fuel consumption, and when servicings are due.

well if the cable is OME and working fine, then the speedo units are just dodgy.....onto plan B, C?....Do the speedo units mount in place firmly and neatly...does the cable end mate properly with the units? The thing with mine was the cable wouuld 'wind up' and when it let go with a rush, the unit would either slip or strip..anyway good luck

Many years ago I had a very early rangie and the spindle for the speedo needle siezed in it's bush, causing the noise/slipping in the cable/right angle drive.

Stripped it down, cleaned the parts, freed-up the spindle and soaked the sintered bronze bush in WD40.

    It worked fine after that.

The speedo mechanism in my 84 rangie is different. It had a problem where the speedo reading slowed down, particularly when it was hot.

This turned out to be the spindle for the speedo needle, slipping in a small aluminium coupling, just behind the dial face.

Carefully crimping the aluminium coupling onto the spindle fixed it.

    Speedo is fine.

If I insert a small screwdriver into the cable end and turn it while holding the shaft at the speedo end, I can feel the slipping of the gears, ie cable end turns without the corresponding movement at the speedo.

It only is a problem going forwards. Backwards seems fine.

Even Ford had electronic speeds in the late 70s (XD). This gearbox arrangement is a compromise for a poorly routed cable.

I'm going to strip all 3, and build a composite. I've got nothing to lose except my patience.
