Having said that we have to rebuild the whole head including seating new valves, doing the injectors and the FIP...
If you dont mind paying the bloke who did my crankshaft in the 2.25l diesel to do the machining (hes got a 3 week backlog) I can do the strip prior to the rebuild phase and take the whole thing into work piecemeal.
There is a very very slim chance that I can get the boys doing the machining course to do the machining work but your going to have better odds winning the lotto of that coming off.
Other mods I've heard of for the 3.9 is changing the valves and reporting the head and manifolds add a 3 inch exhaust for better flow, stepping up the injector pump and fitting a bigger injector with more nozzle holes, which would also make sense as preperation for adding the turbo your thinking of putting in. Along the same line you can alse get different plungers for the pump yada yada yada. Pretty much all the stuff you want to do to a sports engine you can do to the 3.9 just dont wind the governor out too much further than where its set by default...bad things happen...
back to the point.... I'll start asking questions, I have a field ex coming up at the end of this week but I should be able to get you some answers after fathers day...

From memory a couple of points about rebuilding a 4BD1 - I have looiked at doing it myself when it eventually becomes necessary but reading the manual I saw a couple of potential problems - one is that it uses dry sleeves, and these are replaced rather than rebored - using a special tool and a BIG press - 50tonnes from memory. A second problem is that the crankshaft is nitrided and the nitride coating needs special testing - and I don't think grinding is approved.
