rebuilding a 4BD1, where? and improvements?

i have a mate that may have to rebuild his 4BD1 (it is out of a mid 80's county) as his wife accidently drove it with a broken oil line somewhere and nearly ran it out of oil - was running at very low oil pressure.

he is pulling it apart this weekend to c the damage, but if he has to rebuild it we need to find a recomended mechanic who knows the motor.

it is non-turbo but will turbo it if it gets re-built. are there any improvements that can be made to these without going over the top? both for performance and strength/reliability?

i also wan to know in case i have to re-build mine one day...
    cheers

Im about due to start that module of my raaf course... can you say free rebuild?

If you like I'll ask if i can do the rebuild for you. should only cost you parts

as to improving it, get the head ports done and the manifolds as well

more later SWMBO wants us to go out.

    def-90 where are you?

KLR Automotive in Sydney do rebuilds on 4BD1 engines. The two owners and one of their mechanics drive 4BD1 powered Rangies.

Im in Wodonga, i'll have to get clearance first tho but will ask tomorrow, going by the course module time frame 3 weeks but thats only if it doesnt need reboring or machining, If thats the case then I wont be able to do it on the course. Having said that we have to rebuild the whole head including seating new valves, doing the injectors and the FIP...

If you dont mind paying the bloke who did my crankshaft in the 2.25l diesel to do the machining (hes got a 3 week backlog) I can do the strip prior to the rebuild phase and take the whole thing into work piecemeal.

There is a very very slim chance that I can get the boys doing the machining course to do the machining work but your going to have better odds winning the lotto of that coming off.

Other mods I've heard of for the 3.9 is changing the valves and reporting the head and manifolds add a 3 inch exhaust for better flow, stepping up the injector pump and fitting a bigger injector with more nozzle holes, which would also make sense as preperation for adding the turbo your thinking of putting in. Along the same line you can alse get different plungers for the pump yada yada yada. Pretty much all the stuff you want to do to a sports engine you can do to the 3.9 just dont wind the governor out too much further than where its set by default...bad things happen...

back to the point.... I'll start asking questions, I have a field ex coming up at the end of this week but I should be able to get you some answers after fathers day...

From memory a couple of points about rebuilding a 4BD1 - I have looiked at doing it myself when it eventually becomes necessary but reading the manual I saw a couple of potential problems - one is that it uses dry sleeves, and these are replaced rather than rebored - using a special tool and a BIG press - 50tonnes from memory. A second problem is that the crankshaft is nitrided and the nitride coating needs special testing - and I don't think grinding is approved.

Zenith motors in Brisbane specialise in Isuzu parts. They are always helpful. They would probably recommend a specialist Isuzu mechanic.

Keep an eye out at your local Isuzu truck spare parts centre as they regulary sell Turbo and non Turbo rebuild kits at a great price and it is all genuine. Get a good engine rebuilder to do it, as the sleeves etc need to be done properly and you only get one chance. Also I think the cranks were only nitrided on the turbo factory engines???.I could be wrong.

Also their is an importer on the Gold Coast who advertises in truck magazines who can supply low km factory 4BD1T engines for 3-4k.
    Its worth thinking about.

I rebuilt a non turbo engine to a turbo engine using a genuine Isuzu turbo rebuild kit. From memory it cost around $1800 for the kit??

    Regards Justin

You are correct that the engine is sleeved (not sure if wet or dry) and AFAIK only std size pistons are available. The sleeves make the rebuild easier as no machining of the block is required.

Also, do not use composite gaskets - they are prone to leaking, the correct gasket looks like laminated stainless steel (lots of thin sheets of metal).

I think only the turbo crank is nitrided???
