    rear diff play

Me again, Taking the the 109 down the Otways last weekend had not done it any favours, while driving it down to the car wash I noticed a clunk while reaplying the accelerator. I did not notice the noise on the trip home after about 9 hours in it I was oblivious to all. Uni's look fine the play is in the diff with a salsbury is it possible to adjust out the play or does any one else have any clues other than a full rebuild.

You can re-set the diff but you will have to strip it first to measure the shim size needed how much play has it got ?? seen up to 1/2 in movement in the pinion befor the thing starts to move the ring gear, went for years like that

There is usually a bit of play in the drive train in most Landrovers. Check that the input flange on the diff is not loose, and if there are no other symptoms (e.g. noise) it is probably not worth worrying about. One possibility that may well be contributing is wear on the splines on both ends of the half axles. This is not a known problem with the S3, but if it has been run for some time without the hub cap(s) there could be excess wear there - easy to check.

before messing with the guts of your diff, unbolt the propshaft from the diff and check the big nut hidden within. Check the front one as well. If either of these comes loose it makes your diff clunk like the pinions in wrong and if it comes all the way undone...

    shudder.......

Further thought - one advantage of the Salisbury is that you can remove the rear cover plate and see just where the play is - unless it is the crown wheel loose on the diff carrier, or really excess backlash on the crown wheel/pinion mesh, it is unlikely to be anything to worry about. It is most likely a combination of small amounts of slack in the mesh, the free play on the gears in the diff centre and the splines on both ends of the half axles.
