Thread: Help, Td5 fuel pump and lines

since when do apprentices run a workshop......
i would find a dealer with mechanics......not one that only has an apprentice.....



if they dont know what they are doing they can break the lines....they are only plastic....
if they used an experienced mechanic who may have an idea of what he is doing......
you would have been on your merry way.......and happy......

I've got a 2000 model td5 defender
... I've had 4 fuel pumps fitted this year

1. Pump died much as you described... I towed it to the mechanic.... they replaced the pump for a new one and at same time they fitted the 127L long ranger

2. I picked up the fender.... drove it out and noticed after about 100 meters down the road engine was labouring... drove it around the block.... barely made it back into the driveway of mechanic.... car died.... it was a dodgy fuel pump.... they replaced it (no charge to me)

3. 2 months later (no more than 3-4 full tanks of diesel).... car died just like the first time.... I towed it in.... same problem.... dead fuel pump.... they replaced.... I drove away

4. About a week after.... noticed a little bit of diesel dripping from the tank.... jumped in, started the fender up..... old ladies were waving me down "...somethings pouring liquid out the back of your car....".... I eventually stopped after 5-6 k's.... diesel was p1ssing out onto the road.... got another tow truck..... hoses had disconnected from the tank somehow.... they fixed, again at no charge to me

The mechanic (a very very good one here in sydney) said that it's a bit tricky to refit the tank in a defender.... fingers crossed that everything still stays connected after they push and fit the tank back into place.... didn't give me alot of confidence.... but then that's the gamble with a britsh built vehicle designed back in the 50's.

Unfortunately it's just one of those things....

Have any of you guys connected/disconnected any of those "high pressure fuel fittings?????
Its beyond me how they seal,never mind hold pressure.
When your fuel pressure reg leaks too much to ignore and you DIY the new one you will know what Im talking about.

I dont know what the part is, but I would bet that they have stuffed the quick release clips for the fuel lines, which no doubt only comes with the entire length of fuel line.

Exactly what I had in mind,I bet the reg doesnt actually leak,its those poxy quick release clips????

there are tools for removing these with minimal fuss......
if you dont have the tools and you botch it up.....you will have nothing but leaks......
if not straight away.......it will leak not too far away.....
they are only plastic......and flimsy....and very fiddly......

In theory they are brilliant,so simple.But trying to undo the one adjacent to the intake manifold,A SWEAR WORD IS VERY APPROPRIATE.Especially if you have big fat hands like mine

Never replaced my fuel pump but cleaned the original one several times.

Agree, taking the fuel lines off the pump is a bit fiddly but no problems if you do not rush. The first time I cleaned the pump it was done in a workshop (never again), they broke one of the fittings and then managed not to fit it properly back on, so fuel was leaking out in the desert..... Was fun to redo the job in the sand...



Anyway, since then I made a hole with a door in the floor to access the pump withouth taking the bloody tank down - now it's easy!
