Thread: Diff problem query

do what blknight says.....
jack up both the back wheels......and spin them both together....either forwards or backwards......
the tailshaft should turn....(gearbox in neutral and cdl unlocked).....


now try.....handbrake on....(to stop the tailshaft from turning) spin either of the rear wheels.....
and the other one should spin in the opposite direction......(the tailshaft not turning).....
ie....one spinning forward should spin the opposite backwards......

Ok, did the whole parkbrake thing and everything appears to be fine now, no noised from the diff, the new pinion flange feels fine, but i will drop the shaft this arvo and see if the shaft going into the diff feels fine.

If it is notchy like you said scouse whats the likely cause? Has fitting the 4 bolt flange instead of the rubber 3 bolt caused this? Matt

I mentioned that as they can feel notchy if the flange nut is overtightened.

Just had another thought... check the preload on the input pinion and the Jeesus nut that holds the drive flange on.

IF the preload has gone sloppy you will get some strange effects.

You'll need to drop the propshaft to check this properly.

Ok, an update, that vibration is still there, but no where near as bad. But sometimes when you lift off the throttle and let the engine slow the vehicle down at low speed around town you can hear a rattle coming from underneath, sounds like the tail shaft. I have checked it, it doesnt appear loose or anything. Is this just like another land rover thing i just need to grow to love? Matt

That's sounding like the handbrake to me. Back off the adjuster & see if the noise changes.
I cleaned mine out a few weeks ago. Judging by all the mud/dirt & removed, I think I'll make it an annual event.

I have lost that little screw that helps hold it on aswell as the tailshaft, does that affect anything internally? Matt

It just holds the drum on while the tailshaft is off.
