the answer is in your question when you go off road you lock cdl and you have drive to both axles the centre diff acts like any diff
i dont think you have a problem with your rear diff
Hi guys, i get the impression all is not well with the rear diff. Up long hills or slopes under load there is what feels like a vibration/shudder type feeling, but if you put your foot on the clutch it stops, gearbox and case feel fine no vibration there around town you dont feel it and cruising on the highway its fine until you load it up in gear. I have just been down and jacked the rear wheels up and this is what i found.
Both rear wheels off the ground and both wheels turn but not the tailshaft.
Lock the CDL and do the same thing neither wheel will turn
Unlock CDL and jack only one wheel up and it doesnt turn, now that is wrong isnt it?
Is all this normal, i was under the impression that the tailshaft should turn, am i wrong? Matt

Thanks RM, something just doesnt feel right. What could the shudder type vibration be? I have recently fitted the pinion flange mod to remove the rubber flange, but it has only started doing it lately, sometimes you can hear a squeak or rattle coming from the drivetrain when you engage the clutch. If there was a diff problem wouldnt there be a constant noise when driving? When i jack it up and turn the wheels it sounds smooth. Matt

Matt, does the rear diff pinion flange feel OK ?
Drop the rear shaft & have a feel.
Does it feel notchy to turn ?
Does it have movement (up/down/side) ?
You could also remove the rear shaft altogether & drive it with the CDL engaged to see if the noise is still there. Noises have a habit of migrating & this might help locating the source.

How about the handbrake (no, not Stacey) ?
Normally this only causes a shudder when slowing down though.

ummmm theres something screwy with what youve written here.... when you have both wheels on the rear off of the ground and turn one the other should turn in reverse unless you have a lsd or diff lock. the prop shaft should stay more or less stationary.
This means that regardless of what your CDL is set at you should be able to turn one wheel and have the other spin the other way...
If both wheels turn the same way and the prop shaft turns and you dont have a LSD or diff lock you have damaged your spider gears (the little ones inside the diff housing) the noise would then be the gears grinding on each other...
Id suggest dropping the propshaft and taking the vehicle for a very short test drive with the cdl locked. If that changes things pull the diff and have an eyeball at it, It only takes an hour to get a diff in and out of a rover (unless you have a sailsbury diff)
