Changing the lid on a Engel fridge to open the other way.

    Hi,

A couple of people asked about changing the engel lid. It's really easy, I used the same hinges and catch. I used some small (maybe less than 8mm) self tapping metal screws, don't need to pilot hole anything. Unscrew all the hinges etc...place the lid in the closed position. Place the hinges on the opposite side and using a cordless drill screw in! same for the catch. Use some sort of packer to level the hinge against the white plastic trim and you'll be right. The bloody lid still slides out of alingement on the hinges when you open it, as it always did , but I will figure a way of fixing that one day. Just screw the original screws back into position so you can swap it back if you ever need to.

    Re changing lid

    Thanks Ben,

I thought it might be that easy, but have not looked. Great idea, maybe you could contact Engel and have them put it up as an option.

    Thanks again,

    Ken

Yeh, you're right there, how many people would have looked at the Engel and looked at the Waeco, decided they needed the ability to change the lid; and bought the Waeco instead?

for a few bucks you can buy the hinge lock that fits under the hinge which stops the lids sliding off, press the plastic retainer back and you can remove the lid

not sure why they fit them as standard

I know how robust my Engel is, I'd never even consider a Waeco. My Engel worked for nearly 2 hours upside down after a server rollover and 3 years later it is still going strong. That hinge lock is about the only issue with it and I keep forgetting to buy one. You can also buy the lock parts and then have the lid just open and come off by unclamping it on three sides.

I also know several people who own 20 to 30 year old Engels that are still going, love to see a plastic Waeco get to that age (the metal ones might).

A good point. They also drew more current too. Mine is the first of the ARB badged Engels and it survived a rollover that my first my Disco didn't. Still I've had nearly 6 years life so far from it and given what the moter went through I reckon they're still built tough.

One Archillies heal of an Engel - which I don't know if they've changed - is the LED light to say the power is on. It is inline with the switch so if it blows... everything stops!
