D2 drivers door hinge....aahhhh!

Who has changed the top door hinge on the driver side of a D2. Bought the simple part today looked like a 10 min job, shouldn't have known better really

got four bolts out and was just removing the 5th when the internal plate moved........only then did I realise that if I continued to removed the last bolt, the whole inner plate would simply fall down into the bodywork.........................

and be lost forever.

How on earth do you change the door hinge without the plate falling off inside? It's a '99 D2 if that makes any difference.

ANY help appreciated

I was going to say pull the door trim off and hold it from the inside, but you are refering to the pillar rather than the door, aren't you?

Yes, the door pillar is the problem. The plate moves about a fair bit behind it when the bolts are loose. I'm not sure if it will stay in place as I can;t see how it is fixed if at all and I obviously don't want to remove the bolt to find out.

Okay, after further consultation it seems that this plate behind the A pillar although loose, will remain in place when the last bolt is removed. Will try tonight with slight aprehension and hopefully will have my new door hinge on for tomorrow........either that or I will be driving to work without a door

What about removing all but the last & when that is really loose, jiggle it around to get the feel?

Surely it would be captive. Even LR aren't that daft.

Are they?

Might I suggest that you insert a couple of peices bent coathanger type bit of wire through two of the holes where you have already removed the bolt from, and then remove the last bolt.

The wire would/should be able to hold the plate in place even if it's not captivated.

Then on replacement of the new hinge you would be able to jiggle the wire to re-align the plate to get at least one bolt back in.

Just a thought

I was going to suggest cable ties through the empty holes to hold the plate in place.

if all is well.....the plate should sit in a box section.....
it is loose on purpose so you can adjust the door to body alignment by moving the plate around......

Why do I always try to invent things - when you already have the tools at hand.

Cable ties - perfect.

............but it would be my guess that even when the last bolt is romoved (as zook said) the plate will stay in place

you could just simply use a strong magnet to hold it in place.....
