97 disco TDI Auto, buying advice?

Ok, what is one worth, what should I look for etc etc in one.

Looking at a 97 TDI auto discovery S. Just drove it, and it's no rocket, but it feels strong and tight.

No passanger airbag, but drivers side? ABS or not?

also, a little rust around the alpine windows, how much to have that fixed?

Only maybes so far, depends on a few factors.

all disco alpines tensd to go with time, not a very dear fix if you dont let them go to far.

tdi's are never rocketships but the auto is the best option by far IMHO

long as it is smooth without to many vibrations, rattles or bangs...

    service history is everything.

check the back floor for rust if the alpines are leaking...

make sure it hasnt been cooked....

    thats about it...

I would say Back lash in the box . Can creap up and feels alot worse in an Auto than a Manual.

Also been looking at disco's myself and there are alot of people dreaming about how much their truck is worth. So be carful.
Saw an add the other day for a Auto V8 1993 disco $16500 (and it had priced to sell on it.) I mean christ you can get a D2 for that . I thought Yeah tell him he's dreaming

Oh yeah and don't spend more going for one with Sunroofs. They all leak, so better of with out them.

This one has 189 thousand on the clock, and has basically had the engine rebuilt to the tune of $4000 worth. very tidy engine transmission and underbody wise, looks new . outside is ok, but a few bubbles on the 2 alpine windows. Saggy headlining of course, but seats are ok, and only missing the carpet in the cargo area, no rust under the carpet in the back.

Asking price is $12k at the moment. Not a bad green colour as well

    Hi,

Were you asking if it had driver's airbag and ABS?

It doesn't. That steering wheel is different to mine (an SE) and it has not got ABS either.

I think in 1997, LR released the models something like this:
S - $40,000 new, no airbags, steel wheels (205 I think), no ABS.
    SE - Alloys (235), driver's airbag, $43,500.
SE7 - same as SE, but with 7 seats.

Not sure about this bit, but I think there was an ES which had even flashier alloys and dual airbags, and ABS. Can't remember the price. The ES I think was also a 7 seater (not sure if it came in 5 and 7 seat options).

If I find out more details, I'll post and let you know...

    Pete

It's defenitely an S, I suspected no airbags and abs, but that's just less things to go wrong. I like the colour myself, but I don't need convincing, it would be SWMBO that needs convincing.

Some alloys would make it look 100 times better as well. Now the question is, how big a set of tyres could I fit before really noticing any difference to the engine? 205R16's are fitted at the moment. So I would want to go with at least the 235/70R16's.

Especially in the Airbag case...there was recent post about replacing the airbags as LR states they should be replaced every 10 years.

Someone mentioned that's been change to 15, but who knows...figures of $2K (only for drivers!) were thrown around!

I can't help on much technical stuff, but I did research the model differentiation when I bought mine a few years back.

Hi pheeny, have a read of the said page on my website, i compiled a heap of stuff with the help of the fellas on here. I think the timing belt and service history is the main thing.

Oh, I forgot to reply to the other bit of your post about the alloys making it look 100 times better.

I just took my alloys off and have put steel wheels on. I put 245/70/16 BFG ATs on it and they fit without any modifications at all.

I don't think the 235/70s are any bigger than the 205s in terms of diameter but I could be wrong.

After I put the 245/70s on, I look at it and think they should have been the original size. I don't notice any difference in performance, but going from 235/70 to 245/70 is only very small (15mm in diameter increase I think).
