Two good points - I have had to replace my thermostat twice in the last 300,000km (only repairs needed on the engine itself - don't talk about Nippon-Denso electrics, I think they are almost as bad as Lucas), most recently a month ago, although I did not notice the noise change, mainly to get the heater to work.
Another way of quietening the gearbox when idling is to leave it in gear and put the transfer case in neutral.
