An update: While it was there on start-up as I left home, the noise disappeared this morning on the way to work. Had to stop 5km into journey and got out with engine running. There was something missing - the tapping. Opened bonnet and could hear 'normal' valvetrain noise, but not the tapping. Got to work in underground garage and tapping there again but not nearly as loud (and the garage is like an echo chamber, I usually really hear the tapping noise in there).

I'm thinking that oil pressure needs rechecking, exhaust joins, plus I think I might try an oil analysis and another check with the stethescope, plus checking the flex plate. I feel that I'm finally getting closer to resolving this, and I won't bother you guys with this anymore till I find an answer!

You are not bothering me at all, I'm really interested in what you find as I am going nuts with the same problem. I was starting to think it may be the push rods sometimes rotate and a worn face allowing the slapping (ticking) and as they eventually rotate around again through normal use the un-worn face seats on the rocker and no more noise. See what it is doing to me? I am going nuts and thinking up all sorts of possible scenarios so anything you come up with that may help me find my sanity would be a blessing, just ask my wife...........
