It was a 99. The cable had always been a bit stiff, but got considerably worse over time. It was very easy to open with the new cable. Maybe the cable had been kinked at installation - it does a U-turn at the catch.Originally Posted by barryj

I have had the same problem. You should be able to reach up from underneath the vehicle, pull of the plastic cover and release the latch manaully
Thats what I did
Had the same problem, with the same cause..
On a D1 the problem is where the wire comes out of the cable and attaches to the release ( this is where the salt and sand gets to).
Anyway in the D1 the cable loops in the front passanger courner, so if you fix the broken pull ( i.e block off end so it does not move) then pulling this loop with a "garden pot hanger" will normall get the latch fee..
Now the D2 may be different but you can try..

Well yes.. it did turn out to be a case of too much of that lovely white sand through the mechanism.
The missus leaning on the bonnet and me pulling like buggery -- not like that.. .. I was pulling on the cable..
Then a good clean out of sand - and lube the cable - fixed.
Now I've just got to replace the bloody handle I broke

If you have an early 1999 DII, the bonnet release cable is prone to stretching and eventually, you'll find that the release handle has to be drawn back quite far before the bonnet disengages.
I got the cable replaced and the bonnet releases with the slightest draw on the handle. Over time, I expect this new cable will stretch and the release will require a longer pull to work.
