Disco 1 steel rims and 265 tyres

Hi all,

Does anyone have a Disco 1 with standard steel wheels with either 235/85 16 or 265/75 16 tyres?

Do the standard steelies have enough offset for these tyres?

I am wanting to know which would be the better option for a set of play rims/tyres as far as fit goes.

The tyres will most likely be MTRs. I wanted some serious play rubber but these seem to be the choice of tyre for my preferred terrain of rock.

I have seen that web page about what fits a Disco 1 but just wanted some specific examples of peoples cars.

I havent tried them yet but i have alloys on my disco and 10 steel rims that i have fitted 5 x 265/75/16 Dunlop MT2 muds to but will have to wait till and get some steel rim nuts and raised springs before i can give them a go.
I had these on my rangie with a 2" lift and they seemed to fit ok without too much scrubbing.

i'm guessing you will rub on full lock as i'm running 245's and do. Also you will definately need to trim your fenders even with a lift

I have 235/85 muds on steel rims. Had to do the camel cut on rear guard. Should probably also adjust steering stops but I don't think its necessary.
This is with a 2" OME lift.
I'm possibly looking to get some 265/75 soon because my next tyre of choice (MTZ) does not come any narrower. I would prefer to stick with a 235/85 but I'm not keen on the tyres available in that size.

I was thinking the 235/85 would be the better fit. Have read that Disco 1s don't accomodate the wider tyres easily. I think I have a 2in spring lift. Was fitted by previous owner. Will have to measure it one day.

There is a rangie in our club with 265/75s on stock mags. Might test fit one some of his before I buy any.

I would prefer not to cut the guards just yet having just bought the car but you gotta do what you gotta do

I think 235/85 size looks good on a Disco. Just beware that in some states there are rules on how big you can go up from the size spec'd for the vehicle. I don't know if this has ever been a real issue.

Qld is 15mm over the largest tyre diameter on your placard. I never had any trouble with 31s on my Rodeo. However these new tryes and rims will only be for play.

I run 265/75 Bf muddies on disco steel rims and they work well.

Mods I've done are:
Lifted defender front king springs,
King springs rear with a 25mm spacer. This gives me around a 3inch lift all up,
I have LC80 shocks in the front
Patrol (GU) shocks rear (brake lines had to be lengthened).

I get a lot of flexi and only had to trim the rear panel a little. I think the 265's look great and the turning circle is still great when you compare it to a Patrol or LC.

I've got 255/85R16 BFG muddies and mine do rub even with a 40mm body and spring lift, Koni shocks but the rubbing isn't too disconcening mainly as it rubs on flat surfaces in the guard not on sharp edges.

I had to wind out my stops so I didn't get the radius arm rub syndrome. I am fitting Disco S1 steelies soon but they're sthe same offset as alloys from what I understand.
