    300tdi vs td5

can't remember if its been discussed before but....... what would be better? i'm not really mechanically minded but have heard that the 300tdi is the better bet, reason for asking - belly has mentioned a td5 dual cab going for a decent price in town, originally what we wanted before getting the wagon, so the wife says if it checks out ok, trade up to newer vehicle, mines a 98 with full service history & 155k kms, the d/c i'm unsure about its age but its on 113k kms. any help much appreciated; i'll be looking at said vehicle tomorrow but will hold off purchase 'til friday if all seems fine.

I'd rather the 300tdi, only because that's what I've got and I'm a bit scared of BMW electronics, but on the TD5s favour, if you want more power you can just chip it.

If you can get a newer DC-Ute, I'd say go for it. Worst case scenario - you put a 2.8HS Diesel in it if the electronics die and you lose confidence in them (unlikely).

Hey - I got one of them! Exactly the same, except their cabin seems to be the special spacious one whereas mine is the normal cramped elbow room version. Room for 3 is stretching it a bit, unless it is 2 + a midget or someone under 5 y.o. They are an excellent base unit to set up as a long distance tourer, and $22K is a GOOD price. They have a strengthened chassis and rear diff which you need in a 130 (all paid for by Telstra). That tray cost $12,000 new!

Anyway, what I was going to say was I've got a TD5 (130) and a TDi 300 (Disco) with similar KMs on them and there's not a huge amount of difference. TD5 is better down low and has a bit more grunt but the 300 is still a lovely engine. The 300 is bad when it is cold, with absolutely no pickup until warmed up.

Only trouble has been with the 300 with a head gasket. So far the TD5 has been perfect (130,000Km) but I've only owned it for a year.

Also, the TD5 is not a BMW engine. It was developed before BMW bought them.

how'd you go nigel, any good? i mis-read belly's message; thought i saw dual cab but it actually said extra cab, oh well i guess i'll keep looking as the wife wants a dual cab (she's convinced our landy has gremlims? that despite what money we've thrown at it over the years something always go wrong - usually when we're over 1000k from home).

I spoke to him this morning.
He pulled the head off and all seems very good, just a totaly stuffed head gasket and 3 loose headbolts, his mechanic mate did the headgasket a few months ago OOPS.
He may not need to get another motor now.
What sort of work do you do for the Shire????,we just had one of your rejects resign(Greg Lovering),WHAT A UNIT

i'm employed as a general hand, my crew i'm in charge of (by default, so short staffed can only get casual/ employment agency types working & they usually only stay a week or so, apparentley the works too hard???) is referred to as 'tree pruning responsive', basically i go out and inspect/prune/chip council trees that irate-payers have issues with, i've been here just over a year, so have no clue on that unit you're referring to, but it does'nt surprise me, half the people here do bugger all just turn up to draw their wage; its a mentality that's slowly being eroded; i don't know what it is, can't say it's an age thing cause the bloke in charge of the 'tree pruning program' crew (50+) works real hard & consistantly ( i was actually warned about him in my interview but found him great to work with as the day just flew by) & i've noticed a few of the youngins recently employed are starting to put their feet up; each to their own i 'spose & at the end of the day the only reason i keep up with my works orders is so my day goes by quicker, the wage is ****e, just under $40k year but then we get a decent amount of o/t through storm damage, cars hitting tree's etc, i also, like you, do a bit a fire wood collecting to support my income and a fair bit of private pruning on weekends/rdo's; you'd be amazed at what people pay to get tree work done but their happier paying me than contractors, i'm usually half the price too but then its not a business for me so i don't have their overheads; i can earn my weekly wage in less than a day with some jobs. so what do you do? i've assumed you work with engineering & constuction, or a title similar.

Greg has been here for 2 1/2 years thats why you wouldnt know him.
Im on the construction crew, usually drive a 6 wheeler, but also drive the semi sidetipper when the other bloke is on the backhoe.Im the waterboy also so get to deliver water to farms, flat out already,1 load yesterday and 3 today.Get to drive loaders from time to time if others are on leave.
We have a good crew but the boss has just left so its a bit unknown what will happen.Normally get plenty of overtime but we have been stopped at the moment.Got $45K+ the last 2 years, but as we still havent started construction yet it wont happen this year. With our boss leaving we wont get any more main roads contracts(overtaking lanes). The boss bought his own grader and is running a crew for Southern Roads Services,a MRD part owned "company"
During the winter just gone we would have "tree pruned" a couple of hundereds of ks of road(both sides). We rarely use a chainsaw unless its too big to fit in the trucks(sidetipper comes in very handy). Our weapons of mass destruction are a 20tonne excavator contractor(smashes the biggest trees to bits in seconds, the backhoe(if you can reach it fully extended rip it down) a big front end loader and a smaller one with a rake with grabs(wicked bit of gear).Get lots of complaints to start with as it does look a mess,by time the graders tidy up the backslopes and we cart the spoil away it looks a million dollars, you can see SAFELY around bends and all the accidents waiting to hapen go.Funnily enough we send any tree hugers to look at other finished work they seem to stop complaining.
