I like it an auto I hate the least.... urmmmm ahhh.. no I hate them all and for the same reason, loose the oil and you windup with nothing drive wise....
IME....
the zf is about as well matched for rover use as you are likely to get but its going to be a case of picking the right sort for what you need to do and you may need to modify and upgrade it.
The reason I like the ZF is simply thats what I know can be mated to the rover engines.
If you want something tougher then IMHO you need to be looking at alisons but they are heavy large and clunky types of boxes better suited to big diesels and not the engines that are generally in landies, a chev v8 diesel would suit an alison as I know them but I wouldnt do that to a landy.
what I know about autos I know because I need to be able to fault find them beyond "Its not working" do the minor stuff that doesnt need a total strip of the box and then farm it out to other agencies with a list of what I think needs doing to it.
IF I ever wound up loosing my left leg Id fit an air compressor and then mod a compressed air assist clutch to be an air operated clutch and pilot it off of a pressure sensitive valve on the shifter.
