As an amputee an automatic is simply easier that a manual for me althought I prefer the manual.

So Dave here is my question: As I have mangled 3 ZF boxes for various reasons do you have an auto that you hate the least? I'm sort of leaning towards the 4L80e from GM but not yet comitted.

I like it an auto I hate the least.... urmmmm ahhh.. no I hate them all and for the same reason, loose the oil and you windup with nothing drive wise....

    IME....

the zf is about as well matched for rover use as you are likely to get but its going to be a case of picking the right sort for what you need to do and you may need to modify and upgrade it.

The reason I like the ZF is simply thats what I know can be mated to the rover engines.

If you want something tougher then IMHO you need to be looking at alisons but they are heavy large and clunky types of boxes better suited to big diesels and not the engines that are generally in landies, a chev v8 diesel would suit an alison as I know them but I wouldnt do that to a landy.

what I know about autos I know because I need to be able to fault find them beyond "Its not working" do the minor stuff that doesnt need a total strip of the box and then farm it out to other agencies with a list of what I think needs doing to it.

IF I ever wound up loosing my left leg Id fit an air compressor and then mod a compressed air assist clutch to be an air operated clutch and pilot it off of a pressure sensitive valve on the shifter.

    It will have some pics.
Dave I did ask comparison questions in a previous thread. With your latest posts I'll stick to the manual.getting off that, do you still have that tub you took off your series 3.I know Chrissy is coming but I wouldn't mind having a look at it sometime in the new year.

Just found and read this thread. Good stuff. I had a turbo 700 behind a Chev v8 Diesel in my Perentie 6x6 camper. [ weighs 4 tonnes]. It broke a couple of times, so I put in a manual 4L80, from the mob in vic. It has no lockup but a low stall converter he said would take the place and give me better economy. OK but come to a set of lights on a bit of a hill and I cant get going. Sometimes have to grab low range. This thread explained it a bit. I have boiled the oil too, despite two oil coolers. So I am still not particularly happy but will have to live with it.
Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Dave, was just reading your old post and noted.

I dont imagine you would get far with no oil in a manual box either, Regards Frank.

Yes, but if your half way up a cliff face and you hole the box or blow a hose you wont go rocketing back down ether.

    Tony

P.S. I reckon an auto in the 130 would be great.

yep but if you see the big puddle of oil down the back or the spotter screams at you that all the gearbox oil is now all over that last boulder that you can get the vehicle to go that last 20m or so to a safe place as opposed to the autos version of it..."Nahh let gravity have a play."

Seems to me that there are a hell of a lot more Posts in this Forum about buggered clutches and manual gearboxes than Auto's, but I'm biased, cos I love Auto's, never had an Auto let me down in over 20 years of Auto off-road, wish I could say the same for clutches and manual boxes, Regards Frank.
