Discovery 1 - Jack and handle

    Hi,

I've just bought a 1993 Discovery 1 - V81. It doesn't have a jack or handle or any supplied tools.

Is there any generic brand jacks that would be safe to use when necessary?

I'm new to 4WDs and my other cars have always been newish and never had to change a tyre since 1983.

Still have a BA Falcon but the Disco will be my toy.

    Advice would be appreciated.

I don't think there were any supplied tools, other than a wheelbrace. If it's like mine the Jack hides under the bonnet, passenger side and the handle is in the bag with the roof racks under the rear seats. (ah, there is a tool for unclipping the roof racks)
I don't know a brand to recommend but make sure you don't use a scissor jack - the Disco is significantly heavier than a normal sedan.
Try a search here for 'disco jack' or look in the markets section to see if anyones selling one.

    Congratulations on your purchase!

The jack for series 1 disco was a bottle jack with the top of the ram shaped so that fits under the axles. The jack was stored in the engine bay behind the front left light, there is also a pressed steel wheel chock stored there as well. The wheel brace and jack handle extensions are stored in a plastic bag under the back seat.

I would get a bottle jack rated over 2 tonne - ideally one with thye top of the ram shaped to lock in somewhere on the axles so it will not slip out.

The Disco standard "red" jack is a telescopic arrangement and lifts higher than most aftermarket bottle jacks. It also has a U piece on top to fit snugly under the axle. If the jack is not under the bonnet, I'd be looking around the 2nd hand market for a genuine LR jack.

Oh and welcome- when you want to use the Disco for what it was built for I'm sure you will get plenty of encouragement and advice here ! Consider joining a 4WD club too. I assure you - you will get hooked.

    Thanks.

The vehicle has a second battery where the jack should have been so it is not fitted and the handle under the seat is missing as well.

I'm thinking about joining a club as I want to learn how to use it properly.

Friends that I know have bought 4WDs over the years and got them bogged the first time as they thought it was going to be easy and didn't bother to find out how and where to use them properly.

    Hi Chris,
you may pick up an original jack from one of the land rover wreckers/ parts suppliers, if not one of the many tool suppliers should be able to get one for you, make sure you get one with a concave head so it fits on the axles. don't buy an original wheel brace as they bend easily, buy a socket and a telescopic handle. also get a couple of plastic wheel chocks.

and as Quiggers said the disco is absolutely the best Land ever bar none! if you need any questions answered about almost anything just ask the forum and I'm sure someone will be able to help.

welcome to the Land Rover family.

    Thanks Jeff.

I've got onto one on EBay so hopefully it will come soon. Otherwise I'll try a some places in Perth. Kalgoorlie is not easy for Disco parts.

I can't wait to really try it out. It really is as comfortable to drive as my BA Falcon (which is hardly driven now) and gives me the height to see through pas vehicles as parking a normal car in Kalgoorlie hard with all the 4WDs blocking the view when you are reversing out onto the main street with the angle parking. Now I am a culprit too.

Need to get a new plastic surround for the cigarette light which keeps falling out. It still works and I use it for my TomTom One GPS. So next trip to Perth might mean a visit to a wreckers.

you will find that alot of wreckers will mail parts to you. there is some good part suppliers in SA and VIC. there is a few forum members in WA and they should be able to give you a list of part suppliers if you ask.
PS ebay is a great place for land rover stuff.
