When do the updated Disco 1s really start?

    Hi all,

I was talking to Incisor in his shop today and he mentioned that he had a 1995 Disco which is the first of the updated D1 model. The RAVE CD that I have states that it is for 95 onwards D1s and many parts state they are for 95 onwards D1s.
However I have a 2/1994 D1 that has the updated interior, 3.9 V8, R380 manual box, 24 spline axles (I've got an RD56 air locker), bigger headlights, tail lights in the bumper and no indicators on the rear pillars..
When I was looking for a D1 some of the 1993 pre updates had the pre update look but a 3.9 V8 whereas it appeared the 1994 had all the new stuff.

So why is it that most places have the update as a 1995 thing?

Also did any of the earlier D1s come with a radio antenna on the driver's side guard or is this just a really common modification?

    Thanks.

The D1 update is called the Discovery 95MY - my first D1 was built in Oct 1993 and was the first with the 3.9 engine but had the old interior. It was delivered new in Jan 94 and was a 94MY - the last of the old 3.5s were the 93MY.

My D1 update was built in Jan 94 and was called a 95MY and was delivered in the very first shipment arriving in dealerships in late Apr 94 - early May 94. The D1 update was on the road in Australia from about Feb 94 but these were advance vehicles for testing and road testing by the media. As I said, my car was in the first shipment of "production" vehicles and they arrived Apr/May 94.

So the MY does not bear any resemblance to when the car was actually produced - it is a model designation.

Both of my D1s had the aerial on the drivers guard.

The Pre update 3.9 was only sold for a few months - the 3.9 in this D1 is slightly different to the 3.9 in the updates. The updates have a serpantine belt and the earlier 3.9 had fan belts. The earlier 3.9 did not have the R380 grearbox.

    Thanks for the info guys.
It is amazing that no matter how much you research a model before you buy one there is always something new to learn about it

I'd never even noticed that some of the D1s I drove would have had glass antennas and some guard antennas.

Yup, I know of a Feb 94 D1 update 3 door Tdi R380, one of the first sold on the eastern seaboard of this fair land, has now moved down here and is booked in next week for its 420K service. Still going strong and loved to bits by its owners.

    Mine:
D1 93 V8 5 door: UK build is 6/93. aerial on right, original interior and grille/lights.... but the front bumper is of the type found on a D1 update, I believe it to be original.

When I got my 95 Rossignol in 95, the update had been around for quite a while.
