how to start a drowned TD5??

so a TD5 has 5 cylinders and 4 glow plugs?? right??

so if one was to drown a TD5 how the hell do you get the water out of the cylinders??
you can get the 4 glow plugs out but murphys law would suggest that the only cylinder without the glow plug would be just on its way up to compression??

this is all asuming that the ecu is high and dry also..

    cheers phil

Remove the injector from the cylinder without a glow plug.

The injectors are inside the head and need a special tool to remove them,$1000ea if you damage one doing it!!!!!!!
Another lovely Landy feature,BUT all the jappers are up on the same technology these days

    My opening guess...

disconnect the control harness for the #5, then lift the rocker cover off..

follow all your usual steps for starting a drowned diesel but add ass appropriate

manually hold down the exhaust valve and turn the engine over on the pry bar for at least 4 full turns of the engine...

keep the engine in a non startable condition and crank on the starter for 10 seconds.

    reassemble then start.

Sorry if this is off topic, but I don't have the first idea how to start a drowned diesel, and I want to know.

Any chance of a tutorial? And for diesels other than td5.

    Cheers
    Simon.

well we had this drama a few weeks ago a mates GU he drowned it and of course a landie to the rescue

we removed the injectors but we could only get 4 of the six out and it still would not turn over
what we did was tow it backwards in 4th gear it worked a treat
its all we could do in the middle of no where & coming on to dark

The easy way is to remove the glowplugs.BUT quite often carbon builds up on the electrode larger than the thread hole, the electrode then snaps off and you are then in lots of strife as you cant retrieve it out of the motor, seen it happen twice on hiluxes.

Andrew, you seem to talk from experience. Has Betty done any drinking?

    Easy...

your biggest problem (assuming the engine is not broken) is the fact that there is uncompressable water where you want to put compressable air... get rid of the water and providing you havent killed the engine in some other way your laughing... heres how.

First up remove the dipstick, open the oil filler and check the oil in the engine, if its massively overfull drain it.

While thats happening, get the water out of the air inlet mainifold and disconnect the exhaust at the union of the exhaust pipe and the end of the manifold/turbo.

    1. pull the glow plugs. remove the electrical connections pull the plugs and the water can come out.. its the same concept as removing the spark plugs from a petrol engine.

    2. remove the injectors. same basic idea as removing the glow plugs but you also get the benifit of being able to see the fuel spill out of the High pressure lines or if you install the injectors upside down on the HP lines you can do a quicky check on the spray pattern.

    3. Decompress via the exhaust valves.. Assuming youve got the vehicle out of the water remove the rocker cover and open the exhaust valves manually as the engine is turned over by hand. If you have a non interfering type head (valves can never touch the pistons unless they are over opened) you can get away with winding the adjusters up till the valves never actually seat (a 1.5mm wide washer inserted between the rocker and valve slide works in a 2.25l Rover engine)

    4. remove the head, the best option you can visually check all components for damage but its really only for if you can get it to a workshop or just happen to have all the bits your going to have to replace on hand.

once youve gotten the engine in a condition where you can turn it over, crank it by hand for 4-10 turns of the crank then turn it on the starter.. Re-assamble reprime and restart..

You will also need to check every other oil compartment in the vehicle and the fuel tank.
