if you put engine oil in a manual box the fine metal particals that normally become stuck to the edge and bottom of the box will become suspended in the froth and mixed through everything. Put a magnetic plug on the bottom of your TX next time you change the oil and check it out on the next oil change..

fnurgle me, IF I keep pointing out the good points on the evil grey boxes Im going to convert myself.....
Yea, but it will get you home, and a manual really is a gearbag, an auto a Tx

yeah but what would you rather, replace just the leaky seal that dropped all the oil... Or

replace the leaky seal and rebuild half the box?

If its a manual and your really desperte you can fill it up with cooking fat grease even pure detergent anything else wet. hell even water will get it home if your gentle with it.

As rick 130 pointed out, engine oil is recommended in some gearboxes e.g. LT95 (sorry rick, not LT85 as this is the santana fitted to county's, although may recommend engine oil??) so this is no good??

I've ran diesel engine oil in petrols, namely a 250 crossflow, which has done over 40thou on just that, without a filter change (250's are cheaper than Z9's ) without fail, i've also run engine oil in gearbox's and diffs numerous times without ill affect, no i don't condone or do this regularaly (except for the falcon ) but it will not cause a failure within 1000klms to get you home.

the likelyhood of needing to use a bulk amount of either of these oils, suggests the idea that something is ****ed and you'll doing major repairs anyhow

So, manual transmission and auto gearbox

Hate to sound real ignorant, but the workshop manual for my old Rangie specifies 20w-50 motor oil for the transfer case. Is this true?????

Its fine if you use it from new... or make sure that the box is thorougly cleaned out before putting the engine oil in...

ITs the same sort of reason you dont put high detergent oils in old worn engines... it stirs up all the crud and causes problems you wouldnt have had otherwise.

Talking detergents in oils is like 70's stuff, when mixing oils would kill a motor. Your now saying if i used engine oil in my gearbag(Not transmission ) from new it'll be fine, but if i used a gear oil then substituted it with engine oil it would suddenly die, due to the frothing of the oil and the flotation of the particals
