    sailsbury pinion oil leak

    mm my 110 Tdi defender is leaking oil out of the pinion oil seal is there a easy fix in layman terms yes or no

    you wanted a yes or no answer....

    typical customer when they get what they ask for they complain about not getting what they actually needed....


    I'll bet you drive a toyota dontcha....


    Pull the shaft off
    pull the jesus nut out
    put the drive flange off
    pull the seal out.

    inspect the pinion shaft for damage speedy sleeve it if need be

    and assembly is the reverse of dissasembly.

    I'll apologise for the toyota line now.. I forgot, no personal attacks allowed.

    G'day All, I have never actually replaced one myself but have had to have had the job done, and the lads at the (what used 2 b a L/r garage) used a special tool to place the seal at a pre determined depth, this tool was made of ?nylon and it pushed the seal to the correct place the remainder was done (crush effect) by the nut being re torqued cheers dennis

    Before removing 'jesus' nut, mark nut and pinion. After replacement of seal the nut is wound on back to that mark otherwise the crush sleave is crushed more and changes rotational force. Fairly straight forward using the original crush sleave. If loose or replacement of crush sleave can be a bitch to set correctly.

    Ta guys i do remember someone in the past saying something about a crush sleave thats the bit i wanted to know about

    this customer did not explain him self correctly

    to do everything else i could do but it was the crush sleave that concerned me

    Ideally you replace that crush sleeve. its important to preload. In an emergancy you can set preload by feel... jack up both rear wheels, spin the flange before you remove it, remeber how it feels and sounds.


    follow the count the number of turns and wind up at the paint mark routine for the inital go then twist by hand to see how it feels and sounds...

    back it off a whisker it should be worse. go back to the paint mark then go past it in mickey hairs. till it sounds and feels right.

    When you get back redo the job replacing the seal and doing everything to the correct tensions and settings.. Or leave it till it dies again then do the job properly..

    so if i mark the jesus nut and pinion it seems a straight forward job

    next question is the seal a off the shelf jobbie of is it a special one thay only land rover will have

    its generic off the shelf from almost any reputable bearing shop. although a bearing shop will want the numbers/sample to get you the right one.


    repco can get them in if they dont have them on shelf

    Just remeber to count the turns as your taking it off, no point in marking it if your going to over tighten or go slack on a turn or two.
