I pulled the RHS hub off this morning to check the stub axle & seal.
Seal was installed correctly (whew!) & close inspection of the stub axle found no problems. No grooving & a perfectly smooth seal running surface - so no joy there as far accounting for the slight leak.
However, after I removed the seal I discovered some score marks on the inside of the hub, where the seal goes in. (see photo). There were several quite deep scores in a cluster, & one separate one further round (both marked on the photo). This leads me to believe that the leak was not from the seal running surface, but from around the circumference of the seal body. It was a very small leak, taking several thousand K's to make a mess on the inside of the wheel rim.
I have smoothed off the projections in both cases & re-assembled the hub using Permatex gasket cement around the seal body as I inserted it, using a driving flange as a drift.
